The sixth set in the series collects 14 classic vocal-group performances, many of which came to prominence from a radio show sponsored by Slim's Times Square Records shop. A few hits are included -- "Life Is but a Dream" by the Classics, "Fountain of Love" by the Starlarks -- but mainly the focus is on obscure but excellent doo wop by the Clusters, Magnificents, Matadors, and the Delroys. An excellent purchase for collectors and passive listeners alike.
With a title like Memories of Times Square Record Shop, you wouldn't think that this Collectables series would have such broad appeal, but it compiles dozens of rare doo wop singles -- most of which are excellent -- that have changed hands for substantial sums. Obsessive doo wop fans won't be 100 percent satisfied, of course (these are, after all, budget releases), but the beauty of these discs is that the music can be enjoyed by the informed and merely interested alike.
If you've ever wondered why certain doo-wop records go for exorbitant prices nowadays, it can all be traced back to a small record shop on Times Square that advertised on a local New York radio show. This is part of a ten-volume series bringing together some of those wonderful rarities that exchanged hands with ravenous collectors back then, and if you're looking for radio-friendly '50s hits in this package, you came to the wrong address.
