Monkey Grip (Great Aussie Cult Movie) 1982
So, you’ve all heard about brilliant Aussie film-making right? Art-house, unique, great script-writing, brilliant character development and most importantly a strong, moving, realistic, believable storyline with a killer ending.
All this - so absent from Hollywood blockbusters these days…..right? So – I implore you to take a look at this Aussie cult movie you’ve no doubt never heard of – Monkey Grip (1982).
Like the name suggests, this riveting and passionate story details the lives of young people in and about the music industry in Melbourne and Sydney during the late 1970’s and early eighties. Engendered in this film, we see all the glam of rock bands (in-situ in pubs and clubs), the people behind them (photographers, sound mixers and recording engineers etc.), and the divergent lives they live with and amongst each other. And yes, there are devoted lovemaking scenes, nudity, and drug use, that fuels the highs and lows of these people’s lives. But more than that, this movie is a telling tale of love, loss, friendship, angst, ecstasy, and above all, the notion that beyond everything - we are growing, learning, adapting creatures – and may I say, of eloquent beauty.
Lead actors - Noni Hazlehurst and Colin Friels, take us on a recognisable journey for anybody who lived through the 70’s and if not, illustrate an accurate recounting of such times for those who are curious. Ultimately, this is a well-made, finely crafted motion picture, oozing grit and introspection. I was talking with a friend the other day and apparently, the female author of the book from which this film was made went on to be a literary professor at some Aussie university. In addition, the book won The National Book Council Award (Australia) in 1978.
.......If you have a beating heart, you will enjoy this film.

Just a mention….there is a small watermark (cat3movie,us) in white at the top of the screen throughout the movie, however, this is minimal and you soon easily forget that it’s there.
