Critically-acclaimed German pianist Pablo Held has announced TRIO PLAYS STANDARDS, a groundbreaking trio album featuring Robert Landfermann and Jonas Burgwinkel. This project pays homage to the rich legacy of jazz standards, showcasing the trio's distinctive synergy and improvisational mastery.

Reflecting on this milestone, Held explains, "Over 14 previous recordings, we explored a wide array of musical landscapes—original compositions, classical works, pieces by my father Peter Held, and favorites from other artists. Recording an album of standards has always been a dream, now finally realized."

The album includes Held’s unique arrangements of Broadway classics like I’ll Never Be the Same, You Won’t Forget Me, and Last Night When We Were Young, alongside reimagined pieces such as Charlie Parker’s Barbados and Bill Evans’ Very Early. It also features Just in Crame, a contrafact of the standard Just in Time, embodying the trio’s improvisational spirit.

Recorded live at Jazz Campus Basel on October 29, 2023, the album captures an intimate setting with a live audience. Engineered by Daniel Dettwiler, mastered by Christoph Stickel, and featuring liner notes by Norma Winstone, the release showcases timeless design by Christian Schäfer with photos by Linghuan Zhang.

TRIO PLAYS STANDARDS is the 6th release on Held’s HOPALIT RECORDS, following the success of WHO WE ARE. The album debuts with a six-month exclusive pre-release on Bandcamp and live shows before its wider distribution. Each purchase includes a bonus album, TRIO PLAYS STANDARDS – LIVE, recorded during Held’s STANDARDS WEEK festival at LOFT Köln in 2022.
