Miss Holocaust Survivor (2020) has a second name. The first, the name used in its screenings in Turkey – undoubtedly an ironic reference to the Survivor competition that has gained popularity in the country – points to the ‘Holocaust Survivors Beauty Pageant’ at the center of the narrative. It also points to the winner of this competition held in Israel for women between the ages of seventy and ninety who survived Nazi concentration camps, the beauty queen: Miss Holocaust Survivor. The name of the documentary directed and edited by Eytan İpeker used in international events, The Pageant, has a broader meaning; it means ceremony, demonstration, show, parade, etc. This is a title that, although less striking, also carries more clues about the world of the documentary: We are not faced with a film that puts a single character, such as a beauty queen, at the center, or looks at the world of a character in detail. Instead of a very determinedly character-focused structure, Miss Holocaust Survivor centers on the ‘spectacle’ where suffering is competed. Watching this film is like watching a kind of parade where bodies carrying the memory of the genocide are turned into images.
