Gary Johnson is the most sought-after professional killer in New Orleans. To his clients, he is like something out of a movie: the mysterious gun for hire. Hit Man - Killer per caso, film diretto da Richard Linklater, segue le imprese di Gary Johnson (Glen Powell), un professore di psicologia un po' impacciato, che vive con i suoi gatti e collabora sotto copertura per il dipartimento di polizia di New Orleans.
Quando gli viene chiesto di fingersi un killer per sventare possibili omicidi e incastrare i mandanti, si rivela incredibilmente abile, grazie anche ai camaleontici travestimenti di cui è capace. La sua doppia e solida identità viene messa in crisi dall'affascinante Madison (Adria Arjona), che gli commissiona l'uccisione del marito.
