Mariam Said joins presenter Ian Skelly to describe her late husband’s role in co-founding the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, and discuss how the momentum of the initiative led to the inauguration of the Barenboim-Said Akademie in Berlin. We hear, too, Daniel Barenboim’s recollections about the original impetus behind the Orchestra’s launch, plus current members of the ensemble share how the ideals enshrined in the orchestra's DNA remain more relevant than ever.

West–Eastern Divan Orchestra
Daniel Barenboim (conductor)
In 1999, young Arab and Israeli musicians came together for the groundbreaking creative and social experiment that was the West–Eastern Divan Orchestra. A quarter of a century later, the ideals of listening, respect and mutual understanding enshrined in this ensemble are underlined like never before. For this timely Prom, the orchestra and its co-founder Daniel Barenboim bring with them Brahms’s consolatory Violin Concerto featuring soloist Anne-Sophie Mutter and the monolithic, momentum-fuelled symphony by Schubert that deservedly acquired the nickname ‘Great’.
Presented by Ian Skelly, live from the Royal Albert Hall, London.
First broadcast: 11 August 2024
