Frank is a retired Lt. Col. in the US Army. He's blind and impossible to get along with. Charlie is at school and is looking forward to going to university; to help pay for a trip home for Christmas, he agrees to look after Frank over Thanksgiving. Charlie is a poor scholarship student at the prestigious and expensive Baird School. As in life, the poor are too often the losers. Charles becomes an unwitting witness to the hooliganism of his spoiled classmates. For the coming Monday, Director Trask appoints a committee to look into the case, and until then Charles will have to do community service for his edification. He has to take care of the blind war veteran Slade (Al Pacino), who on top of that has a rather difficult character. The blind man manages to influence the boy and change his views forever. The film is a remake of the Italian masterpiece of the same name by Dino Rizzi from 1974 with the participation of Vittorio Gasman.
