Produced by Paul Quin
Broadcast April 26, 2009

John Leland, official librarian to Henry VIII, was the earliest of
modern English antiquaries. He travelled through England for
nine years. His work provided those in control of the 'dissolution
of the monasteries' with 'hit lists'.

David Wallace explores Leland's search through the libraries of
all the religious houses to catalogue their literary treasures before
the monasteries were destroyed and their manuscripts dispersed.
