The crowds are insane, the traffic is crazy, the prices outrageous, the cold can be bone-chillingly frigid, and yet, people flock to experience the magic that is New York at Christmas time. That magic is Saks, Macy’s and Cartier vying to present the most extravagant window art, the Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular honed to perfection, the Rockefeller Centre Plaza’s skating rink and outsize tree, and the endlessly enchanting tree lights of the city.
And yet, a block away from Rockefeller and its madness is to be found a serenity and tranquillity which might perhaps represent the essence of Christmas; a
narrative shaped beyond the noise, the glitz and the glamour of Fifth Avenue – and one of humble birth and divine incarnation. This is a tale told annually within the walls of Saint Thomas Church in both word and music. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, Saint Thomas’ choir sings numerous Lessons & Carols Services, offers Messiah performances, and concerts of seasonal music, all of which tempt hundreds to step across the church’s portals to experience something of the season’s spiritual core.
The eclectic mix of American and English music heard on this recording recreates some of the sounds encountered in Saint Thomas, were one to step inside in this enchanted season. It follows the sense of Advent expectation, succeeded by the Christmas joy, and then the hope of mankind which pervades the message of Epiphany. This collection of music mixes the familiar and unfamiliar; carols which speak so indelibly of the season, alongside some perhaps lesser-known music.
The cover features artwork by American painter Paul Moro (1886–1953), Saint Thomas Church, Fifth Avenue, painted from his art restoration studio across the street, and completed on December 26, 1933. His granddaughter, Christina Zuccari (Moro Studio, Inc.), continues the family business in Long Island City to this day.
