The morons bashing this film are smooth-brain simpletons. This is one of the most interesting movies I've seen this year. This movie is essentially an allegory for the Irish Civil War when brother fought brother (IRA vs. "Free-states") seemingly w/o physical provocation. It escalated from being friendly to all-out-war overnight... and this movie parables this by personifying the two factions in two friends. But even if you don't know anything about the Irish Civil War (I didn't), the movie is just an interesting period-piece, character study of a fictional RURAL Irish village on a fictional Irish island in the early 1920's era. The way they speak.. interact... simply live/exist is fascinating. Like for instance, the incredibly nosy busy-body shopkeeper woman who's everyone's business. She runs one of few establishments on the island so her shop doubles as the local Post Office... but being a nosy bitch, she doesn't have any qualms about opening everyone's mail & personal letters and reading them for gossip. This movie is FILLED with interesting characters like this. |
