In this Freudian version of the Bluebeard tale, a young, trust-funded New Yorker goes to Mexico on vacation before marrying an old friend whom she considers a safe choice for a husband. However, there she finds her dream man, a handsome, mysterious stranger who spots her in a crowd. In a matter of a few days they marry, honeymoon, and move to his mansion, to which he has added a wing full of rooms where famous murders took place. She discovers many secrets about the house and her husband, but what she really wants to know is what is in the room her husband always keeps locked.

Soon after architect Mark Lamphere (Michael Redgrave) marries Celia (Joan Bennett), she gradually begins to suspect that he has a past life that he s been keeping from her. But she doesn't know the half of it, and when he leaves on a business trip, she starts to uncover the sinister secret of his purpose-designed house and its apparent surplus of rooms, the seventh of which is kept firmly locked. From the strongly expressionist use of symbolic flowers and shadows in the opening sequence, legendary director Fritz Lang stamps his artistic signature on every frame, helped by suitably high-contrast cinematography by Stanley Cortez (The Night of the Hunter) and a score by composer Miklós Rósza (The Killers) that insinuates itself into every emotional nook and cranny.
