Spanky and Our Gang was a 1960s American folk rock band led by vocalist Elaine "Spanky" McFarlane. They formed in 1966 in Illinois and began to perform the increasingly popular sunshine-pop style with a touch of psychedelia. The band's name comes from the gangster short comedies of the 1930s starring young actor George "Spanky" McFarland, who shared the same last name as vocalist Elaine. The initial composition of the team was as follows: Elaine "Spanky" McFarlane - vocals; Nigel Pickering - rhythm guitar Paul Oz Bach (Paul "Oz" Bach) - bass guitar, vocals; Malcolm Hale - guitar, trombone, vocals John Seiter - drums Geoffrey Myers - bass, vocals The first self-titled album was released on the Mercury label in 1967, which peaked at #9 on the Billboard and revealed both the band's strengths and weaknesses. If the former included the great ability of the members to create beautiful vocal harmonies, which gave reason to compare them with The Mamas and Papas, then the latter was not a hit repertoire, although several songs from the album were released as singles, in particular "Lazy Day" and "Sunday Will Never Be the Same", which were well received by fans and sold over a million copies. Then the group tries to consolidate the first success and releases the album Like to Get to Know You in the next 1968 and several singles. And after the recording of the third album, which was released in early 1969, the band's lead guitarist Malcolm Hale was found dead in his Chicago home. His death was explained at the time as a bout of bronchial pneumonia, which was later disputed by various studies that claimed carbon monoxide poisoning was to blame, but regardless of the cause of Hale's death, it was a crushing blow to the group, because this excellent multi-instrumentalist did most of the arrangements and basically kept the group together. Hale's death gradually led to the decision to disband the band in 1969, although six years later, in 1975, the remaining members, inviting several new musicians, gathered again to record the Change album on the Epic label, which, however, no longer had success. After the breakup of the group, Elaine "Spanky" had some popularity as a solo artist, and even toured in the 80s with The New Mamas and the Papas singing the late Mama Cass Elliot
