Tribunale di Saint-Omer. Rama è una scrittrice che sta assistendo al processo di Laurence Coly, una donna accusata di aver ucciso la figlia infante dopo averla abbandonata sulla riva di una spiaggia. Rama intende usare il processo come spunto per rivistare in chiave moderna il mito di Medea. Tuttavia il processo prende una piega inaspettata e la scrittrice, incinta di quattro mesi, si ritroverà a mettere in discussione ogni certezza sulla propria maternità.
