. Way back in the 70's and 80's my local pub in Islington was the Kings Head. At the rear of the premises was a large room that had once hosted boxing matches but in my day it had become a theatre. In the large bar there was live music Monday - Saturday but with a small stage and restrictions on the number of musicians imposed by the "Loony Left" Islington Council we often ventured further afield to see a full band. . Theatres do not usually open on a Sunday so the "governer", Dan Crawford (RIP), wanted to make the space pay. He decided to to make it a music venue and charge admission - about five quid if my memory serves me correctly. . One of the local bands who played there several times was Dire Straits (before they were famous). They didn't have far to travel as some of them lived on the Holloway Road. There may not have been a full house for their first gig but by the time they returned word had got around that this was a band worth coughing up a fiver to hear. A pint of Fullers ESB was only about a quid! so this was serious money we were laying out! It was standing room only in the theatre and no-one dared go out to the bar for another ale. . Boy did we have a great time. . Then some blasted disc jockey (Charlie Gillett, BBC Radio London) decided to play a demo of "Sultans Of Swing" and that was it. The end of our Sunday night musical delight. . Or so we thought. The band decided to return to the Kings Head for one more gig to say a "thank you" to those who had supported them in their early days. Of course, if word had got out that Dire Straits were doing a pub-rock gig there would have been a host of fans blocking the traffic on Upper Street. . What to do? The event was billed as an appearance by the "Cafe Racers". This was one of the bands Mark Knopfler had been playing with in recent years. It was a secret - but word got out among the regulars in the Kings Head . We were some of the first to purchase tickets for the Sunday night. . Yep, it was another great performance from the Knopfler family et al . Those were the days. . Enjoy. . |
