Una giovane ragazza viene trovata morta in una piazza parigina con indosso un abito da sera. Il commissario Maigret deve capire prima di tutto di chi si tratta: nessuno sembra averla conosciuta né ricordarla. Incontra successivamente una delinquente, che stranamente somiglia alla vittima, e in lui si risveglia il ricordo di un'altra scomparsa, più antica e più intima.
