One of the more unusual British rock formations of the early 70s, Amazing Blondel played instruments from the Middle Ages to the reign of Elizabeth, and their songs were styled after that period. School friends John David Gladwyn and Terry Wincott had been performing together in various ensembles since the mid-60s, and by the end of the decade they ended up in a team called "Methuselah". The band cut hard rock with a touch of progressive and folk, but for John and Terry was too loud. The guys were more suited to acoustic music, and moving in this direction, they organized their own project. At the time interest in the Renaissance was on the rise, and Gladwyn and Wincott tried to emphasize the medieval sound. Moreover, even the name for their group was inspired by the name of one of the court musicians of King Richard the First. In 1970, the debut LP "The Amazing Blondel" was released on Bell Records. Recorded with the participation of guitarist Jim Sullivan and drummer Clem Cattini, this album fit well into the then rock mainstream and sounded more modern than all subsequent works. Of the "archaic" numbers on the disc, there were only three things: "Saxon Lady", "Season Of The Year" and "Shepherd's Song". Shortly after the release of the record, Eddie Baird joined the tandem of John and Terry, and with the help of the guys from The ensemble signed a contract with Island Records. With the transformation to the trio format, the musical palette of "Amazing Blondel" became richer, but the band did not resort to the services of session players at concerts. The highlight of the performances of the ensemble was the use of up to forty different instruments (lute, lyre, oboe, ocarina, etc.), and only three of them could sound at any given time. In the same 1970, the team made their debut on "Island" with the album "Evensong", on which the main bet was made on pseudo-medieval ballads and madrigals. The audience greeted the work favorably, and the next year followed by a continuation in the form of "Fantasia Lindum". Despite the fact that "Amazing Blondel" remained true to acoustics, here they managed to play a 25-minute suite that occupied the entire first side of the record. In addition, the disc featured a couple of madrigals, two medieval dancers and the closest thing to the 20th century, "Safety In God Alone". The culmination of the creative upsurge of "Amazing Blondel" was the disc "England", on which the trio presented the most juicy musical landscape. Compositions from this album were often played by American progressive radio stations, while the band performed confidently in the same bundle with "Genesis" and "Procol Harum". Unfortunately, shortly after the release of "England" Gladwyn resigned, and Wincott and Baird were left alone. Having cut the name of the project to "Blondel", they recorded a number of albums, but the dust of centuries in these works was felt less and less. closed. The "Amazing Blondel" reunion took place in 1997, when the classic line-up released the album "Restoration". The band's live performances also resumed, and in 1998 the archival live album "A Foreign Field That Is Forever England" was released.
