Flexible devices are gradually emerging as an alternative viable low-cost user-friendly technology for wearable health care services in different fields. Some of the attractive features of flexible devices are the integration of multiple sensing units with electronic circuits for any planar and non-planar mounting surfaces. With the advancement of flexible technologies, now the devices can be fabricated with superior response characteristics comparable to the conventional silicon IC technology. The purpose of the present book is to provide the readers with a single platform to develop a system using flexible sensors integrating with interfacing/signal conditioning, data conversion and communication circuits.
During the last decade, soft robotics has seen an immense amount of growth due to its attractive characteristics, such as environmental adaptability, owing to the flexible structures employed, and operational safety for users, providing a promising human–machine interaction environment. To realize a soft robotic system, smart integration of several subsystems such as sensors, signal conditioning circuits, processors and software, actuators, and control and feedback mechanisms are needed. In the Chapter 1, an overview of the different types of sensors needed for soft robotics is presented. Some of the sensors help to realize haptic exploration, collision avoidance, grasping, object identification, and shape recognition. In addition, this chapter emphasizes the important characteristics of these sensors along with their advantages, disadvantages, applications and different parameters affecting their coherent behavior with the working environment.
