There is an aphorism ‘The prerequisite for field theory is field theory’. It seems to be easily and universally understood by those who teach the subject, and it also appears to resonate with those who are starting to learn it. Roughly, the meaning is this: quantum field theory is a vast subject, with connections to most areas of modern physics and also modern mathematics. It contains many useful ideas, techniques, and methods. Some of these are sophisticated elaborations of what is taught in classes in mechanics, electromagnetism and quantum mechanics. Others, such as Feynman diagrams and the Feynman path integral, may be new to most students beginning to study field theory. When learning field theory for the first time, one must learn a great deal of technical material which may obscure the larger picture. A good grasp of what to do often seems to be a prerequisite to understanding why to do it.
This book is a modern introduction to quantum field theory. It is based on a series
of premises about the relation of quantum field theory to modern physics research.
