Nel 1984 il ranger dell'Esercito Briggs, in compagnia di Lulu, un pastore belga, attraversa la costa del Pacifico a bordo della sua Ford Bronco per assistere al funerale del loro miglior amico e istruttore di cani. Lungo la strada si faranno impazzire a vicenda, infrangeranno una manciata di leggi, eluderanno per un pelo la morte e impareranno ad abbassare la guardia per avere la possibilità di trovare la felicità.
