Mayor Kelley who is part owner of the Globe Times newspaper in Dodge City has hired Jim Murdoch to take over as editor. Jim is a cousin of Marsh Murdock who ran the paper in Wichita. The residents of Dodge City are unhappy with the previous editor especially over a story written by Cal McDavid about Sally Bascom and her dance hall. Earp tells Murdock he thinks the story was accurate but Earp has no proof that Sally ran a crooked establishment, yet. That night while trying to wash up, McDavid breaks into Earp's unlocked room to steal his Buntline pistol. McDavid confronts Sally in her living quarters where he shoots her and leaves the Buntline beside the body to frame Earp. He returns to the paper to write the story. Earp decides to play along with the frame-up hoping McDavid makes a mistake. McDavid has several witnesses lined up implicating Earp. Disliking Earp's decisions, Gibbs resigns to work with the returning Doc Holliday to clear Earp but their actions may do more harm than good.
