Siamo nel 1942 proprio nel bel mezzo della seconda guerra mondiale. I due fratelli Gerda e Otto resteranno da soli quando la polizia norvegese arresterà i loro genitori perchè parte della resistenza. I due bambini hanno difficoltà a cavarsela da soli e un giorno troveranno nascosti in un armadio di casa altri due bambini ebrei, Sarah e Daniel, che i genitori stavano proteggendo.
Da quel momento Gerda e Otto avranno un ruolo fondamentale per la sopravvivenza dei due bambini. Dovranno portare a termine la missione dei loro genitori e aiutare Sarah e Daniel a scappare dai nazisti, scappando in Svezia, sfruttando il suo ruolo neutrale.
