Brit-Award-winning, Grammy- and ARIA- nominated saxophonist Amy Dickson presents her new ABC Classics album Island Songs, featuring world-premiere recordings of concertos by three of Australia’s most renowned composers: Brett Dean, Ross Edwards and Peter Sculthorpe. Recorded with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, all works on the album were written / arranged specifically for Amy.

Peter Sculthorpe’s Island Songs contains some of the most beguilingly lyrical music written by the foremost Australian composer of his generation, whose death in August 2014 was lamented throughout the world. The work consists of two movements – Song of Home, which in the words of the composer ‘sings of the love that Indigenous inhabitants have for their island home, the place where they and their ancestors were born’; and Lament and Yearning, which tells of the potential tragedy of climate change and a hope for a more stable world. The work is based on three melodies from Australia’s far north, including the much-loved Djilile.

Ross Edwards’ Full Moon Dances is made up of five seamless movements, creating a kaleidoscope of sound featuring fragments of birdsong, plainsong, drones and Indigenous chants from around the world. These sounds are brought together around the central figure of the solo saxophonist, who acts as ‘Moon Goddess incarnate, source of plant life and protector of the environment’. The Siduri Dances, by composer, conductor and violist Brett Dean, celebrates another female figure: ‘a wise female divinity from the Epic of Gilgamesh, who dwells by the sea at the ends of the earth and offers sage advice (and a parting drink!) to those travelling to other realms.’
