Mei Lee (voice of Rosalie Chiang) is a confident, dorky 13-year-old torn between staying her mother's dutiful daughter and the chaos of adolescence. Her protective, if not slightly overbearing mother, Ming (voice of Sandra Oh), is never far from her daughter - an unfortunate reality for the teenager. And as if changes to her interests, relationships and body weren't enough, whenever she gets too excited (which is practically ALWAYS), she "poofs" into a giant red panda.
Red, film diretto da Domee Shi, racconta la storia di Mei Lee, una tredicenne, che in piena tempesta ormonale, durante i difficili e tormentati anni della pubertà, è pronta a vivere quello che lei stessa definisce "l'anno migliore del mondo". Una mattina, però, Mei Lee si risveglia con fattezze per nulla adolescenziali, ma simili a quelle di un grosso panda rosso dal pelo morbidissimo. È sua madre a spiegarle che la sua famiglia è anticamente collegata da un legame mistico con l'animale, che ha causato un difetto del gene.
Questa trasformazione animalesca, però, si innesca soltanto quando la giovane si entusiasma e prova emozioni forti, creandole non poco imbarazzo e situazioni spiacevoli a scuola. Come gestirà Mei Lee questa situazione?
