Christian is the respected curator of a contemporary art museum, a divorced but devoted father of two who drives an electric car and supports good causes. His next show is "The Square", an installation which invites passersby to altruism, reminding them of their role as responsible fellow human beings. But sometimes, it is difficult to live up to your own ideals: Christian's foolish response to the theft of his phone drags him into shameful situations. Meanwhile, the museum's PR agency has created an unexpected campaign for "The Square". The response is overblown and sends Christian, as well as the museum, into an existential crisis.
The Square, film diretto da Ruben Östlund, vede protagonista Christian (Claes Bang), un curatore di musei. L'uomo lavora al Palazzo Reale di Stoccolma che, abolita la monarchia svedese, è stato trasformato in un museo d'arte contemporanea. Un giorno arriva una nuova installazione che in forma d'arte deve rappresentare la fiducia, l'altruismo e la condivisione, incentrata su un oggetto: The Square. Si tratta di un piccolo spazio di forma quadrata, aperto ma con dei confini tracciati a terra sul manto stradale fatto di pietre. È come se fosse una sorta di piccolo santuario dentro il quale tutti hanno i medesimi diritti e doveri.
Quello che Christian deve trovare ora è un'impresa di pubbliche relazioni che si occupi di promuovere la mostra al museo con un buon piano di marketing, sponsorizzandolo soprattutto su internet e sui principali canali social. Una volta trovata la società, tuttavia, all'uomo viene rubato il cellulare. La sua reazione scatenerà una serie di disastrosi eventi che renderanno l’inaugurazione un vero caos…
