Quote:

Blurring the lines between documentary and action movie, between bleak realities and empowering fantasy, the unflinching narratives of gangsta rap remain among hip-hop’s most influential, popular and controversial strains. Inspired by Philadelphia rapper Schoolly D’s groundbreaking, monolithic 1985 12-inch "P.S.K.-What Does It Mean?" California rappers like Ice-T, N.W.A., and Too $hort started making records better suited for car stereos than pop radio—gleefully explicit, focused on violent realism and speaking frankly to systemic problems. In the ’90s, artists like Dr. Dre and 2Pac helped turn gangsta rap from underground sensation into a Billboard-dominating cultural force. Ice Cube preferred the term “reality rap,” and indeed gangsta rap provided a window into what was happening on the street corners of Houston, Memphis, Austin, Cleveland, New Orleans, Miami, Atlanta, and beyond. Today, gangsta rap is part of hip-hop’s understructure, a key element in the luxury rap of Rick Ross and the Pulitzer-winning panoramas of Kendrick Lamar.

avatarkentk9 the thing is , rock music is big dumb fun and will never get old , but rap's peak was probably around 1992 , if rap was more in the style of beastie boys then it would deserve a chance

avatarthe silly bandanas , the gold chains , the same old beat , cliche after cliche - how nice..... it don't matter how clever the lyrics may be , but if you can't put actual music behind it that isn't a sample then why ?

avatarkentk9 i own basically 80% of what they have out and downloaded the rest years ago - just putting their name out there. seen them live a few years ago , they only played for 1 hour BUT they go non stop - straight into every song. the singer (steve austin - no not that one) contacted limes disease a few years ago and now has a limp yet continues to tour.

avatarwhat really angers me is people who don't go looking for music that don't really get played , for example there's a really heavy extreme band called "today is the day" - they have 11 albums out , some of the angriest stuff you will ever hear and they are mostly brilliant.

I've heard of them. They're a heavy metal / deathcore / grindcore band, originally from Nashville but I think they're based in Maine now? They toured with Motorhead and other heavy metal bands. Unfortunately there are many bands that never get radio air-play or make it in the mainstream but I think they're on Youtube. Maybe one of our awesome music uploaders will read this and share something? If you join Torrent Galaxy, you can make requests easily yourself. I've done it (too) many times.

On a personal level, I agree with you. The only rap track that ever made it into my favorites playlist is California Love by 2Pac, and you have to agree, it's a pretty groovy jam. Will rap go the way of disco and eventually disappear? Maybe but I wouldn't bet money on it. One look at the Billboard Hot 100 Chart or the number of people who are downloading compilations like this one tells you that you should probably keep your money in your pocket. Whether we like it or not, my gut says rap is here to stay. Which is fine with me. Taste in music is like taste in everything else. It's personal. Some people can bite into a raw tomato the same way they bite into an apple. I vomit at the thought. Sparkling water or normal? Chicken or fish? AC-DC with or after Bon Scott? :_:-) The list goes on and on and on. As I wrote in my first reply above, 'live and let live' is a pretty good motto when it comes to music - and almost everything else I can think of when people are presented with a choice.

Rock on dude. 🥂 Have a great weekend.

avatarHowdy @ Guest-3864 ☮

I'm not a rap fan myself, but the answer to your question is not as complex as it seems. Rap music emerged in the 1980s, mainly in the poor, inner cities of The USA among African American kids whose parents often didn't have money to pay for guitar or piano lessons. Much less the instruments themselves. Many of these kids had talent, for sure, but learning to play an instrument takes time and money. As a result, they improvised with what they had or could afford - and that meant using 'samples', and in so doing, invented their own style of music. You can dislike Rap music (we agree on that) but you can't really knock the kids for making the most out of what they had. As for the fashion aspect of your comment, rockers have their long hair, leather jackets and jeans. Rappers wear gold chains and bandanas. Fashion statements have been a part of popular music since Elvis. I say live and let live, but I'm an old fart who appreciates musical talent in whatever form I find it.
