Two fine Jerry Lee Lewis albums from 1976 and 1977 The recordings produced the US Country hits ‘Come On In’, ‘Let’s Put It Back Together Again’ and ‘Middle Age Crazy’. Jerry Lee’s longtime relationship with Mercury Records and producer Jerry Kennedy was coming to an end at the time of these recordings, and Lewis was being affected by health problems. However, Kennedy coaxed performances from Lewis, resulting in these very successful albums. Digitally remastered and slipcased, and with extensive new notes.

Jerry Lee Lewis is a remarkable talent, and a man who beyond all odds has outlasted most all those he started out with on Sun Records; all the big names have gone, Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Charlie Rich and more besides.

A winner on his day performing country music, he could out sing most straight ahead country acts. Never mind those who crossed over. Jerry Lee was another class back when these recordings (produced by Jerry Kennedy) were made (mid-1970s), and the same could be said for his formative years and those made not long after those found here.

Among the finest renditions on the album as Lewis places his own unique stamp on the material include a ‘killer’ version of the Hank Williams’ covered “Wedding Bells” (which though credited to Claude Boone, word has it was written by Arthur Q. Smith; aka James Pritchett) and the two tracks that round off Country Class “The One Rose That’s Left In My Heart” and with him in great voice tender love ballad “The Closest Thing To You I Can Find”.

Yes, it does have other top class country fare beforehand. As in “Let’s Put it Back Together” (Foster, Rice) and with solos at Lewis’ request from Lloyd Green on pedal steel guitar and Kenneth Lovelace on fiddle perfectly beckoned. Others of note include “No One Will Ever Know” (Foree, Rose) and “I Sure Miss Those Good Old Times” (Mack Vickery) plus “The Old Country Church” comes over nicely too. He gets to share a few childhood memories as he add-libs a little. Great country choir! Loose and breezy “After the Fool You’ve Made Of Me” sounds different to most anything I have heard him do. I love it too as Charlie McCoy’s harmonica is joined by some of the smartest picking on the whole collection. As for “Jerry Lee’s Rock & Roll Revival Show” it is a potent mixture of rock’n’roll and boogie, and though excellent, it pretty much stands on its own among the country numbers.

He opens Country Memories with one of the finest songs of that period, “Middle Age Crazy” (Sonny Throckmorton) and it finds Lewis at the top of his game and it doesn’t stop there as it’s followed in the running order by “Let’s Say Goodbye Like We Said Hello (In A Friendly Kind Of Way)” and there are others that have Jerry Lee and his Nashville studio musicians make hay.

It is well worth noting the players too, as with the first album it has pedal steel guitar greats Green and Pete Drake (the latter survived for the second record but Green’s slot went to Weldon Myrick), Hargus ‘Pig’ Robbins, Harold Bradley, Ray Edenton, Buddy Harman, Bob Moore, Chip Young and of course, Lewis’ band buddy, fiddle player Lovelace. His versions of “Jealous Heart”, “Georgia On My Mind” and mid-paced “As Long As We Live” plus heart-tugging ode “(You’d Think By Now) I’d Be Over You” are excellent. With lots of freedom for Jerry Lee to rattle the ivories “Country Memories” is also a bright little number. His rendition of Bob McDill’s “What’s so Good About Goodbye” to the accompaniment of pedal steel, strings and beautiful harmony vocals it is like the song is lifted up on angel’s wings (or at least thermals). Closer “Tennessee Saturday Night” is a Jerry Lee boogie cut, enough said!
