(2021) Laura Nyro – Trees of the Ages: Laura Nyro Live in Japan
Review:
A member of both the Songwriters and Rock & Roll Halls of Fame, Laura Nyro not only wrote songs that became hits for acts including The 5th Dimension, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Barbra Streisand, Three Dog Night, and many more, but has been cited as a major influence by Kate Bush, Elton John, Cyndi Lauper, Elvis Costello, Todd Rundgren, Broadway composer Stephen Schwartz (Godspell, Wicked), and countless others. She recorded 10 studio albums (one released posthumously), but a live performance from Nyro was always an event. Trees of the Ages: Live in Japan was first issued in that country in 2003 as An Evening with Laura Nyro but has been out-of-print ever since, save for a truncated version from the U.S. EMI Special Markets label. At the piano and accompanied by a trio consisting of Diane Wilson, Dian Sorrell, and Diane Garisto, Nyro ran through her classic songbook (“And When I Die,” “Wedding Bell Blues,” “Emmie”) as well as spellbinding covers of Bacharach and David (“Walk on By”), Smokey Robinson (“Ooo Baby Baby”), and The 5 Royales/The Shirelles (Lowman Pauling and Ralph Bass’ “Dedicated to the One I Love”). Omnivore’s reissue of this beautiful, intimate performance features all-new artwork and promises to restore the once-rare concert to its rightful place in the Nyro live canon. —
