Catharine Deane is a psychotherapist who is part of a revolutionary new treatment which allows her mind to literally enter the mind of her patients. Her experience in this method takes an unexpected turn when an F.B.I. Agent comes to ask for a desperate favor. They had just tracked down a notorious serial killer, Carl Stargher, whose method of operation is to abduct women one at a time and place them in a secret area where they are kept for about forty hours until they are slowly drowned. Unfortunately, the killer has fallen into an irreversible coma which means he cannot confess where he has taken his latest victim before she dies. Now, Catherine Deane must race against time to explore the twisted mind of the killer to get the information she needs, but Stargher's damaged personality poses dangers that threaten to overwhelm her.

The Cell - La cellula, film horror diretto da Tarsem Singh, segue le vicende di Catherine Deane (Jennifer Lopez), un'assistente sociale che sta seguendo un paziente molto particolare. Si tratta di Edward (Colton James), un bambino in coma sottoposto a una nuova procedura tecnologica che permette ai medici di proiettarsi all’interno della mente umana. La dottoressa spera in questo modo di aiutarlo a liberarsi da ciò che lo trattiene in un sonno profondo e, finalmente, risvegliarlo. I genitori del piccolo, nonostante qualche evidente miglioramento, decidono di interrompere le cure e trovare un altro modo per riabbracciare il figlio.
Un giorno al laboratorio viene portato Carl Stargher (Vincent D'Onofrio), un serial killer che prima uccide le sue vittime facendole annegare e poi le utilizza per soddisfare le sue manie sessuali. L’uomo, dopo essere stato catturato dall’agente di polizia Peter Novak (Vince Vaughn), cade in uno stato comatoso. L’ultima donna che ha rapito, però, potrebbe ancora essere viva, intrappolata in una sorta di cellula che si riempie di acqua lentamente. Sarà proprio Catherine a entrare nella mente dell’assassino per tentare di salvare la ragazza. Questo, tuttavia, potrebbe essere molto rischioso: e se non riuscisse a tornare più indietro?
