The Rolling Stones' performance at London's Hyde Park took place on July 5, 1969, two days after the death of Brian Jones, one of the band's founders, who drowned in a swimming pool in the courtyard of his Sussex home, which formerly belonged to writer Alan Alexander Milne. It was a massive concert with over 250,000 spectators, featuring King Crimson, Family, Battered Ornaments, Third Ear Band, Alexis Korner's New Church, Screw and Roy Harper alongside the Rollings. The Rolling Stones had been slated for a few weeks earlier to introduce new guitarist Mick Taylor to the public. But in connection with the death of Brian, the concert was dedicated to his memory. Before the performance, Jagger read an excerpt from the poem "Adonais" by Percy Shelley, written on the death of Shelley's friend John Keats, and released several thousand white butterflies as a symbol of the liberation of the late Brian's freedom-loving spirit. The concert began with one of the deceased's favorite songs, “I’m Yours And I’m Hers” by Johnny Winter.
Quote:
Filmed just two days after the tragic death of guitarist Brian Jones, some 250,000 fans flocked to Hyde Park, London, on a pilgrimage to see the group described as "the greatest rock'n'roll band in the world" - The Rolling Stones. A free show, the band played their hits, including Satisfaction, Honky Tonk Women, Jumping Jack Flash, and Sympathy for the Devil, and released thousands of butterflies into the air in a tribute to their former guitarist.
Winner of The Best News Documentary at the 1969 Rank News Film Awards, The Stones in the Park has been lovingly restored in High Definition and has had its soundtrack remixed in Dolby 5.1 (including the additional song Mercy, Mercy) - this concert has never looked or sounded better. A fascinating documentary on the most successful band of their generation, captured at their most vulnerable, The Stones in the Park is a must for all fans of the legendary rockers.

avatar. I was there. We spent the night trying to sleep in the park but kept getting hassled by the Park Police. . It was a great day and we were only 3 metres from the barrier (protected by Hells Angels). I've still not managed to find my face in the crowd but I will be searching again! . There is not enough music in this "documentary". I do wonder what happened to all of the other footage shot on that day. What we really need is a "director's cut" with nothing but the musical performances. . Mick Jagger, in his white dress, did attempt to release white butterflies from a box. Unfortunately they had not been cared for and most of them had died and fell to the ground. Some had survived and made a quick flight to get out of there! . There was a guy quite close to me who would stand up every 30 minutes and shout "Does anyone want to score?. O fcourse we did:_B) . A good time was had by all. .
