The story of witty and introspective Adam (Charlie Plummer), who appears to be your typical young adult - a little unkempt with raging hormones and excited about a future pursuing his dream of becoming a chef. Expelled halfway through his senior year following an incident in chemistry class, Adam is diagnosed with a mental illness. Sent to a Catholic academy to finish out his term, Adam has little hope of fitting in and just wants to keep his illness secret until he can enroll in culinary school. But when he meets outspoken and fiercely intelligent Maya (Taylor Russell), there is an instant soulful and comforting connection. Quello che tu non vedi, film diretto da Thor Freudenthal, racconta la storia di Adam (Charlie Plummer), un adolescente molto intelligente, ma con un carattere riservato e introspettivo. Ha una grande passione, la cucina, e spera un giorno di farne un lavoro, diventando uno chef.

A seguito di questo evento, Adam viene portato in ospedale, dove gli diagnosticano una malattia mentale: è affetto da schizofrenia.

Qui il giovane cerca di adattarsi al nuovo ambiente, mentre tenta di tenere segreta la sua malattia per non essere compatito o etichettato come diverso. Quando si imbatte in Maya (Taylor Russell), una sua coetanea brillante, schietta e spiritosa, Adam sente sin da subito una forte sintonia con lei e in breve tempo se ne innamora.
