E01 Moseley Veg
Sheep and arable farmers John and his son Ed head to the vibrant Moseley farmers’ market, but when they arrive their pitch location threatens to put a dent in their earnings. The stoic Styan family, meanwhile, need to sell as much veg as possible to make some much-needed repairs to their windblown farm.
E02 Hexham
In the beautiful town of Hexham, its fortnightly market brings hope to farmer Andrew and daughter Emma, who are eager to make good sales of their lamb and beef, and young couple Lee and Shelly who, after grabbing the opportunity of a lifetime, took over Lee’s parent’s cattery business and began raising Tamworth pigs.
E03 Axbridge
In the beautiful, small town of Axbridge in Somerset, there is a farmers' market that is a lifeline. Two sets of farmers are hoping to make a splash there. There are Jack and Nina, with their farm-produced trout products, and competitive brothers Andy and Tim, who are determined to outsell each other with their rapeseed oils and sauces.
E04 Longshaw
Two proud farmers compete in one of the UK’s oldest and most prestigious sheepdog trials at Longshaw. Jim is a sheep farmer from the Yorkshire Dales, with his two dogs Gwen and Taff, and Stuart is a dog breeder and arable farmer from the Pennines, with Jess and Pip. The competition is strong in this part of the Peak District, and at this trial, everyone is out to win.
E05 South of England Agricultural Show
Husband-and-wife cider-makers Liz and Mike are excited to bring their cider, made from eight varieties of apples, to the South of England Agricultural Show. But it's chucking it down, so they are praying their decision to turn some of it into mulled cider will save the day and bring in the much-needed sales.
Meanwhile, Andy, his wife Anna and their two young children, Lillie and Daisy, have spent the last few days gearing up for the show’s poultry competition. It's The X Factor for chickens! After entering chickens here nonstop for 30 years and making the coveted winner’s row last year, Andy is feeling good about his chances, but there are a lot of other family members that might beat him to the win.
E06 Stokesley
Nigel and Benjamin, a father and son team, prepare for the farmers' market in historic Stokesley. These two are more like best friends and partners when it comes to running their rare-breed pig farm, and they are hoping for significant sales after a quiet last few months. Meanwhile, the Mellanby family - Anne, David and son Ian - have harvested some of the biggest veg ever seen for market day, and they are hoping Anne’s homemade soup packs will be the winner of the day.
E07 Ashfields
Two farming families gear up for the horse carriage marathon at Ashfields Carriage and Polo Club in Essex. Three generations from a sheep farm in Newcastle make the 240-mile journey, but all eyes are on how their youngest, 16-year-old Daniel, will do. Jo Alvis and her daughter Katy – who has represented Great Britain in the junior championships – also have a lot to prove on the tricky obstacle course.
E08 Ludlow
Two farming families rely on Ludlow’s market in its ancient square to sell their produce. Father-and-son team David and George grow six varieties of apples that they turn into premium ciders, but rain at the market threatens to put a dint in their sales. Husband and wife Liam and Alice are trying to build a thriving market garden on their modest seven-and-a-half acres. They have a secret sales weapon in the form of their four-month-old baby Sidney, who they are hoping will help pull in the customers.
E09 Exeter
Two couples prepare for big sales at Exeter farmers' market today. Former archaeologist Janet and her husband Andy are hoping to sell some of their chickens to bring in the cash that will enable them to finish Uncle Pat's new home on their farm. Meanwhile, Liv and Henry are gearing up to sell all of their vegetables. They have big plans to create an outdoor kitchen on their modest seven-acre farm, and with some exciting news on the horizon, this young couple are praying for all the sales they can get.
E10 Moseley Wine
After an early frost decimated a big part of their crop, father-and-son team Billy and Billy Jr are excited to sell a fair chunk of their organic fruit and nuts at the lively Moseley farmers' market in Birmingham. Meanwhile, farmer Leon is hoping his brother-in-law Peter will pull in the punters to try and buy some of their home-grown wines and gins.
E11 Bowhouse Honey
What started as a hobby for dad Jeff has now become a full-on family business with his two charming Mancunian daughters, Tracy and Karen, as they make honey in Perthshire, Scotland.
Young couple Connie and Tom are following their dream of becoming organic vegetable growers on their modest two-acre small holding in East Neuk.
Both these ambitious families are out to sell what they can at the legendary Bowhouse indoor market in Fife.
E12 Petersfield
Preparing for the picturesque Petersfield market in Hampshire are Mike and grandson Jan. It’s not just their range of 3-, 6- and 18-month-old cheeses they will be trying to sell, but home-grown vegetables as well.
Also going to the market are Phil and Sue, who gave up their old lives to rear lamb. They are hoping to sell out Phil’s grandfather’s 100-year-old secret-recipe sausages and their new minted hogget.
E13 Melton Mowbray
At one of the UK's oldest and biggest livestock markets in the town of Melton Mowbray, young sheep farmer Elizabeth – with her partner Mitchel - is hoping to impress her dad by selling four of their breeding rams, while experienced mum Sheila and daughter Julie intend to cement their national reputation for sheep breeding by selling theirs.
E14 Creake Abbey
Young farmer Izzi took over from her dad aged just 22. She is responsible for a herd of 43 highland cows and some rare Lincoln reds.
Sisters Laura and Samantha started making award-winning wines on 12 acres of their dad’s farm just four years ago.
With lots of overheads and plans for their farms' futures, these women head to the beautiful Creake Abbey Famers’ Market to try and fill the coffers.
E15 Cowbridge
Two hard-working farming couples go to the close-knit Cowbridge Farmers’ Market in south Wales. Elwyn and his partner Ann-Sophie hope to unload their large range of veg, and with a baby on the way, healthy sales are needed more than ever before. Pig farmers Liz and Andrew are looking to convert another batch of shoppers to their range of charcuterie.
E16 Cullompton
Donna and her two teenage boys Will and Jack gear up to sell their home-reared bacon butties, pulled pork wraps and burgers at Cullompton Food Festival. Farming couple Melanie and Peter prepare for an uphill struggle to convert the British public to their unique products, including their special homemade goat curry.
E17 Winchester
Busy beekeepers Debbie and Chris traverse the southern counties collecting honey from their 220 hives, while vegetable and fruit farmers Paul and Jackie, with a little help from their two-year-old son Arthur, gather their bumper crop of plums, damsons and the unusual cucamelons, all for the Winchester Farmers' Market in Hampshire.
E18 Stroud
Sisters Rowan and Lily took over their mother’s business creating natural cosmetics from plants grown in their magnificent garden. Now they are learning the ropes while trying to keep the business afloat.
Meanwhile, dairy farmer Jess considers her cows her 'business partners'. But with a low impact and hands-on approach, profit margins can be slim. All of these women intend to go all out at the beautiful Stroud Farmers’ Market, to prove the hard work is worthwhile.
E19 Bowhouse Cheese
Hoping to make healthy sales at the famous Bowhouse indoor market in Fife are two Scottish farming families.
To try and squeeze more income from their milk, husband and wife Robert and Jane, along with their son Ben, now make 27 tonnes of award-winning cheese each year on their 660-acre dairy farm.
The Bruces have given up their careers to start a small farm growing botanicals to make into spirits and liquors.
E20 Farden
Today, we meet farmers whose sheepdogs aren’t just invaluable for the help they provide on their farms. Billy and his nephew Jock have both had some success at sheepdog trials in the past, but there has always been one man stopping them reaching the top - the national champion: Billy's father, Jock Sr. Today, they hope to beat him for once.
Melissa and Kenny decided to downsize their farm after Kenny suffered a life-changing accident. They now breed and train sheepdogs, and they are hoping two-year-old collie Sally will be the one to get Kenny back into the national team.
