A tribe of cats called the Jellicles must decide yearly which one will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new Jellicle life.
Cats, il film diretto da Tom Hooper, è la versione cinematografica del celebre omonimo musical scritto da Andrew Lloyd Webber e si ispira al libro di Thomas Stearns Eliot: Il libro dei gatti tuttofare, una raccolta di poesie del 1939 che racconta il comportamento dei gatti e la loro psicologia.
Il film ruota attorno a un gruppo di gatti del quartiere di Jellicle durante una notte speciale, quando tutta la tribù si riunisce per l'annuale festa di ballo.
In questa occasione il leader del gruppo sceglierà il gatto che avrà l'onore di ascendere al paradiso, l'Heaviside Layer e iniziare così una nuova vita.
