Brought to you by the team behind the Golden Age Of American Rock'n'Roll , Early Girls is our exploration of female pop in the early rock era and encompasses solo artists, girl groups and male vocalists fronted by a female lead. The emphasis is very much on Hot 100 hits.

The subtitling - Early Girls Volume 1 1955-1964 - merely hints at the delights waiting to be heard on this CD. Among its 28 tracks are some of the best girl recordings of the 1950s and 1960s. Carole King sings her classic It Might As Well Rain Until September - a wonderful recording that predates her mega-selling 'Tapestry' album by 9 years. Shirley Ellis raps and rhymes the novelty hit The Name Game, Betty Everett asserts herself after the realisation of You're No Good while Reparata & The Delrons sing their eternal song of confused adolesence Whenever A Teenager Cries. The Shirelles define the girl group sound with Dedicated To The One I Love (and on the way offer an anthem for the harmony sound of the late 1960s - the song was covered by The Mamas & Papas). The Paris Sisters caress I Love How You Love Me, The Angels philsophise on 'Til and Rosie & The Originals sing Angel Baby (in an alternate take of Highland 1011).The Blossoms feature on Son-In-Law, their only hit under their own name. As session singers they appeared on a multitude of other people's recordings as well as ghosting the vocals for The Crystals on He's A Rebel. The group's Darlene Love and Fanita James also scored as two-thirds of Bob B Soxx & The Blue Jeans with Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah and Darlene went on to chart on Phil Spector's Philles label. Unlike other 'girl' compilations, this mixes groups with solo artists and is drawn from far wider period. From start to finish, this album is a joy (and there is more still to come).More trivia...

Early Girls Vol 2 continues our exploration of female pop in the early rock era and encompasses solo artists, girl groups and male vocalists fronted by a female lead. In common with the first volume, the emphasis is on Hot 100 hits, such as Ruby & the Romantics' stylish Our Day Will Come (a US no. 1), Lesley Gore's cry for independence You Don't Own Me, Peggy Lee's truly timeless Fever (heard here in phenomenal stereo), Dinah Washington's irresistible September In The Rain and The Exciters' torrid pop-soul innocence, Bobby's Girl, a Top 3 US hit in 1962. Incidentally, another goodie, April Stevens' kitsch Teach Me Tiger is being featured in a TV ad for a well- known cat food, and will probably receive a wider audience than when it first out (in the States only) in 1959 Ann-Margret's I just Don't Understand was a particular favourite of John Lennon's and a Beatles' version, recorded for the BBC 1963, was recently released on one of the "Anthology" volumes. Rockabilly singer Kent Westberry originally wrote I Just 1963, was recently released on one of the "Anthology" volumes. Rockabilly singer Kent Westberry originally wrote I Just Dont Understand as a harmonica instrumental for his friend Charlie McCoy but nothing came of it. Songwriter Marijohn Wilkin put words to the melody and Ann-Margret cut the song in Nashville, with McCoy on harmonica and Jerry Kennedy playing the first fuzz guitar licks-heard on a hit record. Damita Jo recorded the engaging answer record I'll Save The Last Dance For You, which reached the US Top 30 in the wake of the Drifters #1 Save The Last Dance For Me. Both records utilised the same arranger, Stan Applebaum, who astutely ensured that Jo's version was sufficiently different to merit airplay in its own right. In fact, there are those who prefer it to the Drifters' original. We leave you to decide. This sparkling set also contains several significant non-hits, most notably the little known original version of My Boy Lollipop by 16 year old Barbie Gaye, recorded some 7 years prior to Millie Small's million seller. We feel this alone is worth the price of the CD. Songwriter Ellie Greenwich (heard elsewhere on this CD as a member of the Raindrops), was so taken by the record that she named herself Ellie Gaye when she began making records in 1958. Also included is the rare Highland label version of Lonely Blue Nights, Rosie &The Originals' lost' follow-up to Angel Baby and Forgive Me by Babs Tino -surely a record that deserved a better fate than its minuscule chart placing. Patti Page was surely the Madonna of her day. One wonders if the hip clubbers who raved to Groove Armada's On The Beach last year realised they were chilling to the Singing Rage's 1957 classic Old Cape Cod in disguise. Here's the Ibiza crowd's chance to 'sample' the original. Patti's fans will no doubt also appreciate the inclusion of delicious tracks by multi-tracked former big band singer Margie Rayburn, Philly teenagers Jodie Sands, breathy-voiced 1960s TV starlet Shelley Fabares and mysterious Hollywood folkie Shelby Flint whose delicate offerings are scattered like cherries throughout this cake of a compilation.
Those with a taste for nuttier R&B might prefer the selections by Della Reese (dig that diction!), Stax legend Carla Thomas, Esther Phillips (reborn as a country singer), Etta James (ditto as an interpreter of standards), cool jazz icon Etta Jones, white soul goddess Timi Yuro and Faye 'Atomic' Adams whose rousing original of the perennial Shake A Hand must surely be the definitive version. Talking of rousing, blonde bombshell Lillian Briggs out-swings Louis Jordan on her attack on his I Want You To Be My Baby. This is the version Alan Freed fan Ellie Greenwich thrilled to back in 1955 and helped inspire her to write her own songs. Thanks, Lillian.
Among the poppier lovelies representing early 1960s solo girls are Joanie Sommers (the voice of a zillion Pepsi Cola jingles), beach bunny Diane Ray, Suzie Clark (whose P J Proby-composed Ain't Gonna Kiss Ya is the only non-chart track on this CD) plus Connie wannabes like Ginnie Arnell, Bernadette Carroll and Little Peggy March, the youngest female ever to top the Hot 100.
But speaking on behalf, if I may, of all femme pop devotees out there in punterland, the icing on this irresistible confection has to be the inclusion of a handful of desirable girl group-style gems. Where else can you find the Percells' What Are Boys Made Of, the Starlets' Better Tell Him No and He's Mine by the incredibly monikered Alice Wonder Land (a singing maid, no less - eat your heart out, Little Eva). Nowhere that's where. What a coup!
Spanning the years 1953 to 1964, this varied compilation sounds as lovely as the deluxe packaging looks. The booklet is simply to die for. It is, as they say, exactly what it states on the tin - 28 female classics from the Golden Age of American Pop. Buy with confidence.

The “Early Girls” series usually explores the girl/girl group genre through selections taken from Billboard’s Hot 100 chart in the years between 1954-1963, perceived to be the Golden Age of American Popular Music. On this volume, we have added an extra dimension by including a number of entries from Billboard’s Bubbling Under chart woven in with hit records from the Hot 100 proper, to create a very interesting snapshot of the times.
Launched in June 1959, the Bubbling Under chart comprised records nestling just outside the Top 100, tunes that were poised either to make further upward progress or fade quietly away having failed to do the business. In any event, they were usually regional hits, having made it thus far by virtue of strong airplay and sales in particular cities or states.
Trevor Churchill and I have gone to some lengths to bring you those missing links from the chart pantheon of yesteryear and 13 of the titles on Volume 5 are new to CD with three (by the Chantels, Janie Black and Patty Lace) being released in stereo for the first time. Among the many items of interest are Richie by Gloria Dennis, a regional chartmaker from ’62 written and produced by Ted Daryll and Greg Richards who penned Jay & the Americans’ first hit, She Cried, that same year, (Dear Mr DJ) Play It Again by Tina Robin, an early King-Goffin production that tickled the charts in 1961 when pop music was just beginning to look back on itself, Janie Black’s rather precocious Lonely Sixteen, and a cover version of the Shirelles’ first Scepter hit, Tonight’s The Night by the Chiffons, a record that throws up more questions than answers. These were not the He’s So Fine group, but three LA schoolkids hired to warble over an alternative take of the Shirelles backing track for a one-shot label operating from an accommodation address in a Californian suburb. The facsimile proved quite successful, making #76 on the Big Deal label. Some surmise that Scepter, a New York label, covered their own hit as a feint to discourage cover versions on the West Coast!
“Early Girls Volume 5” features fewer pre-rock mamas than on the previous two volumes and more of the glittering teen goddesses of the Brill Building era. There’s some eye grabbing cover art, fully comprehensive notes and treasure trove of rare pics, all of which make it a fitting bookend to Volume 1 in this engaging series.
