The Story Of The Selfish Down Loader

Once upon a time there was a Torrent site a very good one where a whole world of torrents could be downloaded. The up-loaders were generous and uploaded stuff found nowhere else.  Some up-loaders had bandwidths of 10 -100 megabytes / S while others had a mere few Kb/sec. Nonetheless all were happy to do what they could for the greater good of the online community. Seeding is a like a brotherhood of marathoners where  one runner goes as far as he can and passes on the baton - the seed to the next runner until they all reach their goal. While one runner can run only one mile (akin to a seeder with low bandwidth)  another can run thirty; yet they all run. Now there was a selfish runner who had plenty of juice in him and yet did not carry the baton very far and there was a selfish down-loader who downloaded and downloaded but never seeded. A day came when all the seeds of the torrents on the site died and the site became a Humpty dumpty who sat on a lofty wall a wall limited by the bandwidth of the seeders. The original seeders kept on seeding until all the bandwidth in the world was not enough and no new torrents could be posted as  the up-loaders were too busy keeping the old ones alive. All because of the indifference of a selfish down-loader who did not want to run his mile.  Moral of the story "IF A TORRENT IS NOT SEEDED IT IS AS GOOD AS FORT KNOX WITHOUT THE GOLD". Please seed at least one copy before you leave the party or else there is nothing left for posterity. Thanks

One of my buddies is a selfish downloader. He was selfish even when we were kids. You know the type, you would go to pick up one of his toys that he wasn't playing with. Well as soon as you picked it up he wanted to play with it, that's mine.
One day I was over at his house and had to go do something. So I sneaked on his PC to see what his torrent share ratio was .1:1  I called him out on it. You Ahole, if everyone was like you no one would have anything. It works really good if everyone shares.
I have my share ratio set to 1.5:1 and the short time I have been here at TG I do at least 1.5:1 or 2:1 or 3:1 or even 4:1  Cheers.

From my experience as an up-loader it seems like if you put a torrent it becomes your whole sole responsibility to seed it till kingdom come unless it is porn ( then it garners hordes of seeders until judgment day) . It pains to see your torrent die; especially if you put time in buying, ripping, editing, optimizing and encoding the content . Hope fully people are reading the forum and understand the importance of seeding.

I hear ya Brother,,I have low broadband speed so I invested in seedboxes and when the uploads have been in there for 3 months and there are no leechers I remove them, but as new members arrive they pm me to reseed them again which as the uploader I feel it is my duty to do,,,but the others that have downloaded my files have ran to the hills seeding nothing back.

I have a brother in law that is classic hit and run, as soon as he has downloaded it's striaght for the off button.
Yes it is very sad.
I just looked at my latest torrent which is a fair size at 13 GB and it has 14 seeds (2 of them me)
but when I look at the share ratio on the seedbox it's showing 155 or 2015 GB uploaded
so less than 1 person in 10 is bothering seeding properly :-(

By the rules of pirates since captain kid himself there should be absolute honesty among pirates but I guess it does not apply to e- pirates.

I thought I'm the only one who noticed all this at my end, But I see it clearly now, it's not only me who worried (not that worried) about that.

Over 1002 Torrents running in my seedbox, each and every tutorial content reached to 150.000 Ratio, a bunch of them beat 300.000 more than 3 TB uploaded, these files around 32 to 40 GB between. and 3 to 8 Gb between beat near 900/950 GB even 1 TB above and all of them reached above 150.000 ratios, now thing is, a torrent that uploaded 3 weeks ago and it has the same ratio and reached above 300 seeds within 48 hours, I receive PM,  ''Please seed, it's not getting done'' OMG, I thought to remove torrents that uploaded 3 months ago if they have enough seeders, but when I hear even 3 weeks old file still required sucking bandwidth, removing plan held.

I know, a few of categories content never get adopted by peoples they grab then trash. but something that new on the internet, something that helps to learn, how could they be that selfish by not sharing/transferring a single Damn piece with others?. I mean if We read Torrenting guide and it's Menu, it highly recommended to download what you need and seed at least 1.1 ratios after download, and avoid leeching & never trash torrent until unless it gets finished, and No doubt, a bunch of Pirates around they are alive, they will adopt you file no matter they need it or not but they are just keeping promise and respecting this system. anyways, I can't say above, in my language, these selfish downloaders actually abusing at the whole system.

Honestly, we can just hope for a good, good and bad are part of life, we can put a note to seed our torrents, but we can't force anyone until unless they mean it. But who cares, we still need them to download and I wish one day they will learn why we need them actually.

Its worse than that, some of my packs have ratios near 1000:1, but only a handful (< 10) seeders, one of which is me. :(

I think there is a sure way of making people seed. #1. A code could be incorporated in torrent clients preventing people from deleting a torrent until a ratio of 1:1 is reached ( they should be free to set upload bandwidth with the minimum necessary to get the ratio in 1 week) #2. Send each down-loader a federal e- notice that they should seed 1:1 mandatory by law :D. Many years ago when I was studying c++ my class did write an experimental code preventing the deletion of a file from the class computer until it registered everyone has seen , read or copied the file. I hope code developers read our forums.

I can`t see anything changing soon peeps:-(...Unfortunately with Netflux and Amagon around, peeps are growing up in the "Click and Go" age now....everything is OnDemand8o
Peeps nowadays think everything is like that and it`s a never ending stream of free stuff to just grab:(

All we can do is to keep re-educating the newbies on why seeding is sooooooooo IMPORTANT for keeping torrents alive:love:idea

Pass it forward guys`n`gals:love:-*B)

As long as there are public sites people will hit and run, and in my experience when a site goes private many will just jump ship. It's the ones that have been using torrents for years that are more likely to keep seeding to their preferred ratio. I will admit that when I have downloaded a large file, 10gb or above, then I too might not seed to a 1.1 ratio or above. My problem is shitty bandwidth, I've got a max of 70kbs on the up so would take a lifetime to seed back 10gb. I only really do single TV eps in x265 to keep the quality up but the size down so not a problem there seeding back.

I do see what you guys mean though, and all I can say is keep up the great work you all do and don't let them get you down.

Ps: If fibre is ever layed in my street then I'll be seed seed seeding for all I'm worth.

Thank you uploaders

The torrents I download for personal use (not as a staff member to verify) I do keep seeded. It's mostly books. My bandwidth is limited though.

For many years I was having the low bandwidth problem; however I still amassed many Tbs of high quality stuff. I always seeded at least 1:1 and not seeded when there was more than 10 seeders but always seeded as much as I could if I was one of the only two seeders until a 3rd and 4th one was ready. Now I have a fiber connection and I am all set to seed and upload. Although optimizing sizes and quality is one big problem. Too low file sizes and quality is bad and no one wants to seed , very good quality and size is big and again no one wants to seed. So I resorted to trans-coding in  x265 and AV1 when it comes of age to address the size vs quality issue. So in my opinion the brevity of size , nature of content and high quality of a torrent is a great mix for encouragement of seeders.
