About the terrible picture quality of films and TV series I noticed two interesting things while watching a series today. There is new evidence that the makers, rights holders, TV companies and online services of films and series are deliberately degrading the quality of the available programmes. I have not watched TV for over 6 years. At that time, I noticed that the picture was beautifully clear in commercials and news programmes, but almost unbearably bad in films and series. I watched an episode today that has a commentary at the end. There is a huge difference in picture quality. This is nothing less than a crime against all humanity.  imagesIn films and TV series, we should have the same visuals as we see around us in reality. Both in brightness and in colour. Filmmakers were masters of their art in the old days. To this day, their names stands for quality. And nowadays they compete to see who can make poorer quality films to the greater annoyance of the audience. The other side of the coin is torrentmaking. Video editing and conversion programs also degrade quality. The images are too dark, almost black and too red. This is usually due to automatic settings not being disabled. Automatic brightness and colour adjustments degrade the image. Both x265 10bit and 12bit automatically make images too dark and too red. Going back to the four pictures posted above, a little explanation. When I watch a movie or a series, I first turn off the subtitles. Then I adjust the brightness as much as possible. The four pictures above are brighter than the original. In reality, they are like this: imageAnother interesting thing I noticed, we can't take a snapshot from that video with VLC. Every time I tried, it just saved a solid green image. vlcsnap-2023-01-27-17h32m01s imagesProbably the Releaser disabled the snapshot feature. Finally, contrast and brightness work against each other. It is very difficult to find the right balance. Contrast will make the image too dark and false-coloured. | actually no x265 or x264 compressiosn are done in 2 ways one is by cpu encoding , 2nd by gpu encoding. now if it is cpu encoding the video may glitch sometimes if it is gpu encoding you will a green line go across the screen sometimes either at start of movie or at end. in terms of codecs the encoders have not used the proper compression settings therfore when they use a lower bitrate hence you get pixelations in video while playing or taking snapshots! this brings attention to my encodes all my encodes i use the following: x264- analysis-subpixel refinement- 11 highest compression for x264 to ensure quality takes longer x265-placebo settings and tuning pnsr.. i sometimes use handbrake(gpu amd) for 4k encodes or sometimes megui (cpu) when taking snapshots if the screenshot is green or black it is your gpu not properly processing the snap/bug in vlc. not sure if this answers your questions but should clear up a few things.. if you download WEB-DL uncompressed tv rips/movie webrips the quality is higher because it is usually a straight recorded rip of a movie without any encoding done at all. | Dear atomicfusion! I can honestly tell you that I do not understand everything what you have written. I can only guess what it is about. I'm mainly pissed off about the original materials. Because on TV and in the online space there is a huge discrepancy between the quality of the videos, as I wrote above. This is the point of the pictures posted. The difference between the commentary and the quality of the episode is sky high. It's the same video with the same encoding. | |
