| 1970 *Trivia* Chisum (1970) is based on the Lincoln County War of 1878 and, although it changed a number of details, many of the historical figures in the film (such as Chisum, Tunstall, McSween, Murphy, Brady, Evans, Garrett, and Billy the Kid) were in the New Mexico Territory at the time and did play a part in the conflict. According to a contemporary article in the Los Angeles Times, this was John Wayne's 200th starring role in a feature film. It also noted Wayne was in the "Top Ten Money-Making Stars" list for the 20th consecutive year, and for that year he was second only to Paul Newman. John Wayne had some cosmetic surgery in September 1969, the month before filming began. Although clearly labeled as the older man, at 58 Patric Knowles was actually four years younger than John Wayne. Wayne's character, John Simpson Chisum (referred to as J.S. Chisum on signage for the bank he founded), died five or six years after the events portrayed in this movie, at age 60. In real life, cattle baron John Henry Tunstall (he is called "Henry" or "Henry Tunstall" throughout the film, probably to avoid the confusion of calling both Chisum and Tunstall "John," although he is referred to as J.H. Tunstall on signage over the general store) was 24 when he was murdered; he was played by the 58-year-old Knowles. The real John Chisum was 54 at the time the events in this film occurred, but he was played by the 62-year-old Wayne. While in production on this film in Mexico, John Wayne won the Golden Globe and found out he was nominated for the Oscar® for True Grit (1969). One of six John Wayne films that John Agar appeared in. In the early years of the rating system, the MPAA routinely handed a G rating to John Wayne's films, including this one, despite their heavy violence and occasional profanity --- almost as if they were somehow afraid of him. It's a certainty none of them would still get a G if rated today. | |

| 1957 *Trivia* Legend of the Lost (1957) had working titles of Man from Timbuctoo, and The Legend of Timbuktu. John Wayne broke his leg during filming, causing a three-week delay in the production schedule before shooting resumed in Rome at Cinecittà Studios, where interior sequences were shot. John Wayne and Henry Hathaway worked together six times, beginning with The Shepherd of the Hills (1941) and ending with Wayne's Oscar®-winning role in True Grit (1969). Legend of the Lost (1957) was the last of seven features starring Sophia Loren to be released in the U.S. in the single year of 1957. Some others were: The Gold of Naples (1954) (The Gold of Naples), Boy on a Dolphin (1957) and The Pride and the Passion (1957). Sophia Loren said Legend of the Lost (1957) was physically one of the most difficult pictures she ever made. In addition, she almost died as a result of an accident. In an ancient town, she was put up in a flimsy, unheated motel. At night, it was extremely cold with only a space heater installed by the crew. One night, she had terrible nightmares and ended up crawling to the door in order to breathe, having almost been overcome by the gas heater's carbon monoxide fumes. In his autobiography Jack Cardiff recalled that on the first day of shooting John Wayne, who was supposed to be playing a Foreign Legionnaire, arrived on location wearing a cowboy outfit. When he asked director Henry Hathaway why this was, he looked at Cardiff as if he were mad and exclaimed: "He ALWAYS wears the cowboy outfit!" Shortly before filming began, John Wayne was devastated when the U.S. sided with the Soviet Union in the Suez Crisis. He called for military action in response to the Soviet invasion of Hungary. Wayne had always had a very low opinion of then U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower, and this increased after Suez. However, he continued to publicly support Eisenhower, as he felt Adlai Stevenson, a progressive Democrat, as President, would be far worse for the U.S. and its allies. Check out the cigar-shaped object passing in the sky 1 hr 9 mins into the film. It passes really fast, so keep your eyes peeled. | |

| 1985 *Trivia* John Hughes wasn't happy during filming of this movie, because it interfered with another project he cared about much more and resulted in his working a punishing schedule for months, but he agreed to direct it because Universal gave him a deal where he could also direct the more-valued project if he started this one first. The other film: The Breakfast Club (1985). John Hughes wrote the script in only two days. Kelly LeBrock's character name was inspired by Apple Computer's first GUI computer, the Apple Lisa. On the last day of filming, Robert Rusler auditioned for the role of Ron Grady in A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge (1985). Robert Downey Jr. drove him to the audition. In the John Hughes documentary Don't You Forget About Me (2009), Kelly LeBrock describes her character Lisa as "Mary Poppins with breasts." The jacket worn by Kelly Le Brock in the film was sold to Dina Collection, a pawn shop in Beverly Hills, California for $25,000. | |

| TRIVIA James Stewart was nervous about the phone kiss scene because it was his first onscreen kiss since his return to Hollywood after the war. Under director Frank Capra's watchful eye, Stewart filmed the scene in only one unrehearsed take, and it worked so well that part of the embrace was cut because it was too passionate to pass the censors. | |

| 1964 *Trivia* Filmed in the spring of 1963. The opening titles specifically announce this film as "A sequel to John Wyndham's 'The Midwich Cuckoos'". Ron Goodwin had already composed the score for the predecessor Village of the Damned (1960) and returned for this film. Ian Hendry and Alan Badel play two flatmates in the film. As it was made at a time when homosexuality was illegal in the United Kingdom, there could be no inference that they were anything other than platonic friends. U.S. Naval Activities, London came about in 1951 as a joint military support effort between the U.S. and the UK. This arrangement lasted until 2007; thus, it was entirely possible to see a 'U.S. Navy Exchange' truck motoring around in London in the 1960s. While this truck's presence is not clear in the storyline, there could be a connection to the united effort by the embassies to deal with the foreign children who have the supernatural powers. | 1974 *Trivia* Shot in 12 days. Angel Tompkins was offered percentage points on the profits for this film, but turned it down in favor of payment up front. Katherine Cassavetes (Gossiping Lady 1) and Lady Rowlands (Gossiping Lady 2) were related by marriage as their children John Cassavetes and Gena Rowlands were married from 1954 until his death in 1989. Jay North, who plays Angel Tompkins's teenage object of desire, is best known for being the original Dennis the Menace in the TV series (1959-1963) of the same name. Final film of Quinn O'Hara. She appeared in TV roles after this. She said she grew frustrated with every film role she was offered requiring nudity, which she refused to do. | |

| 1975 *Trivia* The film takes place in 2024. This film took five years to get made. One of the many post-apocalyptic movies to heavily influence the critically acclaimed video game series "Fallout," which began with Fallout (1997). A recurring event throughout the series is to have a canine companion named Dogmeat, which is what Vic called Blood as an insult. Also, underground civilizations are existent within the Fallout series--as they are in this film--in the form of what they call "Vaults." Vaults have since become a prime selling point of the Fallout series. Ray Manzarek (as Ray Manzarec), keyboardist from The Doors, was a musician on this movie. Tim McIntire, who performed the voice of "Blood", sang the main title song, "A Boy and His Dog." The dog Blood sustained no injuries during filming. The scenes depicting him limping were created by placing a rubber band around his paw. In the scene featuring the two dogs fighting, both animals were muzzled, and their claws were clipped to ensure they could not harm each other. The extras in the outdoor movie theater sequence were soldiers from an army base. | |

| 1966 *Trivia* The newspaper shown in closeup around 0:19:40 is dated 19 June 2066. This is the day before the second (successful) launch of the Zero X mission to Mars. The special effects directed by Derek Meddings took six months to complete with a team of 28 technicians. Although very distinctly different, the appearances of both Scott Tracy and Paul Travers were based on Sean Connery by their respective modellers. The top 1960's pop group Cliff Richard and The Shadows "appear" in this film in puppet form, Portrayed as future versions of themselves. They perform two songs: "Lady Penelope", an instrumental, and "Shooting Star", accompanying Cliff Richard. Gerry Anderson had a real "FAB 1", the pink six-wheeled Rolls Royce, built during production. He and his wife, Sylvia Anderson, arrived in it at the movie's premiere. Because any flaws would be magnified on the big screen versus television screens of the time, each puppet was re-made from scratch and sets were designed with more detail. There was much more per-production planning, for camera angles and lighting, to keep the mechanical s of the puppets out of shots. Even though this film failed at the box office, executives at United Artists still believed in the big-screen potential of the story and characters and ordered a sequel: Thunderbird 6 (1968). But that film was also unsuccessful and the feature film franchise was abandoned for decades until Thunderbirds (2004). Last edited by imonline on 2024-08-31 12:47:47 | |

| 1959 *Trivia* Filmed Sep 3-16, 1958 for December release (copyright 1958). In some first-run theaters, a system of wires and pulleys were installed to "fly" a skeleton over the audience at a key moment in the film. In his autobiography producer/director William Castle called the apparatus "Emergo." The original Allied Artists theatrical trailer lists the title as "The House on Haunted Hill." The title on the film is simply "House on Haunted Hill." The $10,000 reward they were seeking - adjusted for inflation - would be worth $105,769.42 in October 2023. Although this was one of Allied Artists' most profitable films of that period, it fell into the public domain. Despite the widespread availability on home video, the current (2018) holder of the Allied Artists library, Warner Bros., still receives bookings for 35mm release prints. The main image in the movie poster showed a woman hanging from a noose with the other end of the rope held aloft by a gigantic grinning skeleton. It also included an image of Vincent Price holding a woman's decapitated head by the hair. In 1959 some newspapers judged the image too gruesome for publication. Exhibitors were encouraged to play up the fact that the movie was so frightening even the ads couldn't be shown. It became a huge box-office hit. | |

| *Trivia* The one-minute kissing sequence between the two leads took eight hours to film over a number of days. This film was directed and produced by Norman Jewison, and stars Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway. There is great on-screen chemistry between McQueen and Dunaway. McQueen plays the charming business man Thomas Crown, who thinks that he has accomplished the perfect multi-million dollar robbery, until he meets Vicki Anderson (insurance investigator), played by Dunaway, who has been employed to investigate the robbery. Here he has certainly met his match. The film won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for 'The Windmills of Your Mind' by Michel Legrand (music), Marilyn Bergman and Alan Bergman (lyrics). Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway star in one of the sexiest heist films of all cinema. McQueen is millionaire Thomas Crown, who robs a bank just for fun with investigator Vicki Anderson (Dunaway) hot on his trail. This poster depicts what is arguably the greatest kiss ever filmed. The photography is unusual for a mainstream Hollywood film, using a split-screen mode. McQueen undertook his own stunts (playing polo) and driving a dune buggy at high speed along the Massachusetts coastline. And of all the films that Steve McQueen made in his career, this is reported to have been his favourite. | |
