L'insegnante di piano Luisa De Dominicis si trasferisce da Milano a Lucca, dove risiede l'uomo di cui è innamorata, l'assessore comunale Ferdinando Bonci-Marinotti. La donna, che lo crede scapolo, è convinta di fargli una piacevole sorpresa: egli, invece, non solo è sposato, ma, poiché spera d'uscir sindaco dalla imminenti elezioni, teme che la presenza dell'amante frustri le sue speranze.
Piano teacher Luisa De Dominicis moves from Milan to Lucca, where the man she falls in love with is the city councilor Ferdinando Bonci-Marinotti. The woman, who believes him a bachelor, is convinced to make him a pleasant surprise: he, however, is not only married, but because he hopes to leave mayor from the upcoming election, fears that the presence of the lover frustrates his hopes.
