The study of light has fascinated philosophers and scientists for many centuries and has led to the development of some of the most important theories in physics. For example, the theories of special relativity and quantum mechanics have their roots in attempts to explain phenomena associated with the generation and propagation of light. Despite all this study and theorizing, however, light remains a mysterious entity propagating as electromagnetic energy in an unknown manner through space. As Feynman says (in Feynman et al., 1964): “When I talk about the fields swishing through space, I have a terrible confusion between the symbols I use to describe the objects and the objects themselves. I cannot really make a picture that is even nearly like the true waves.” ! It is the purpose of this book to explore the nature of light by examining results of some of the pivotal experiments that have been conducted on light.
