The Dublin band Thin Lizzy was formed in 1969 when former members of Them, guitarist Eric Bell and keyboardist Eric Wrixon, invited singing bassist Phil Lynott and drummer Brian Downey to join their company. In the summer of 1970, the debut single “The Farmer” was released on Parlophone, of which a little more than half of the 500 copies were sold out. Vrikson hastened to retreat, and the remaining three, a few months later, joined Decca Records and recorded their first full-length. The album flew past the charts, and its sales were neither shaky nor slow. A similar fate awaited the second record, and yet the first success was not far off. When Thin Lizzy toured England with Slade in late 1972, Decca released their single with an arrangement of the traditional Irish ballad "Whiskey In The Jar". The song spent 17 weeks at the top of the national charts and entered the British Top 10, but the musicians were unhappy with the label of “folkers” stuck to them.
The group gravitated towards hard rock and confirmed its main preferences with the third album "Vagabonds Of The Western World". Despite favorable reception, the release failed to chart, with only the accompanying single "The Rocker" reaching the Irish Top 20. Bell left on the eve of 1974 and was replaced for several months by Gary Moore. Andy G and John Cann were engaged to conduct the German tour, but relations with them did not work out, and the team was on the verge of collapse.
The matter was complicated by the loss of the contract with Decca, but Lynott and Downey withstood the blow and, adding Scotsman Brian Robertson and Californian Scott Gorham to the team, entered into a new deal with Phonogram. If the full-length "Night Life" still reflected the search for the right sound, then by the sessions of "Fighting" the twin guitars of Gorham-Robertson helped the team find their own identity. Soon the long-awaited commercial success came, and the disc "Jailbreak", thanks to the title track and the hit single "The Boys Are Back In Town", burst into the top ten. The release was in great demand not only in Europe, but also on the other side of the ocean, where Thin Lizzy toured with Aerosmith, Rush and REO Speedwagon. Due to Lynott's illness, some of the concerts had to be canceled, but the vocalist did not waste time and, while lying in the hospital, composed material for the album "Johnny The Fox". The British tour in support of the record was sold out, but at the end of the tour Robertson dropped out of the game, having injured his hand in a fight.
During the American sets, the team was once again helped out by Gary Moore, and the three of them went to record the studio album “Bad Reputation.” By the end of the sessions, Robertson still showed up, but as a guest, and in 1978 the guitarist completely said goodbye to Thin Lizzy, organizing the Wild Horses project. "Bad Reputation" rose to number four in the UK charts, and its subsequent double "Live And Dangerous" became a true example of a live rock album.
In 1979, the team released their most successful record, “Black Rose,” but a couple of months after the release, Moore once again ran away, and the resulting vacancy was filled by Midge Ure. However, this guitarist did not stay in the lineup for long, and Snowy White replaced him during the “Chinatown” sessions. Around the same time, keyboardist Darren Wharton joined the team, and by the time "Renegade" was released, he had acquired official status. In the early 80s, the team entered a phase of disintegration, which was mostly associated with drug use. Unable to bear the confusion, White resigned, and Lynott brought John Sykes in his place. The appearance of a new guitarist led to a change in style, and on “Thunder And Lightning”, instead of the usual hard rock for “Thin Lizzy,” real heavy metal sounded. Sales of the disc, unlike its predecessor, were quite brisk, but after the accompanying tour, Phil disbanded his team. As an epitaph, the live album “Life” was released, and some time later, due to a drug overdose, Lynott went to the next world.
Despite the death of the main character of Thin Lizzy, in subsequent years there were repeated attempts to revive the group, and finally in 1996, Sykes, Gorham, Downey and Wharton, with the participation of bassist Marco Mendoza, revived touring activities. In 1998, Brian was replaced by Tommy Aldridge, and in 2000, the updated configuration released the live album "One Night Only". At the beginning of the 2000s, the project was inactive for some time, but already in 2004 performances resumed, and in the period 2008-2009 a couple of archived live shows were released
