The Boys in the Boat, il film diretto da George Clooney, racconta di un trionfo sportivo che è rimasto nella storia.
Siamo nel 1936, mentre l’Europa vive l’ascesa di regimi totalitari, gli Stati Uniti soffrono ancora degli strascichi della Grande Depressione. La squadra di canottaggio dell’Università di Washington è formata da ragazzi provenienti da famiglie in gravi difficoltà finanziare. Fortemente indebitati, arrivano difficilmente a fine mese e fare parte di quella squadra li aiuta a pagare gli studi.
Caratterizzata da una tenacia e un’ambizione notevoli, la squadra si prepara scrupolosamente per partecipare alle Olimpiadi di Berlino di quello stesso anno, dove è prevista anche la presenza tra il pubblico di Adolf Hitler. Data per perdente, la squadra di canottaggio statunitense riesce a spodestare la favorita squadra tedesca e a trionfare vincendo la medaglia d’oro.
La vittoria destò scalpore e grande ammirazione in tutto il mondo.
