Formed in 1995, the Florestan Trio quickly rose to prominence as one of the preeminent piano trios of its generation. Only five years after its founding, Florestan captured the Royal Philharmonic Society Chamber Music Award, thus securing its reputation and appeal. Much of its notoriety comes from a wide range of repertoire and its ability to match its playing to the style of music programmed. This Hyperion 30th Anniversary reissue features three French piano trios: Faure, Debussy, and Ravel. Even within this seemingly narrow category there is much variability, from the precision and intentionality of Ravel to the impetuous, almost careless youthful Debussy, to the seasoned, mature Faure D minor Trio. Florestan brings unique tone qualities, rubato, and balance to each of these works. Beyond its masterful technical abilities, pristine intonation, and clear communication within the ensemble, Florestan plays with a clear, resonating sound that is carefully balanced, ensuring that every note is audible and important. The relaxed, meticulously controlled sense of pacing is ideal for these French trios; the careful, detailed use of dynamics highlights the beautiful contours of every phrase. Coupled with Hyperion's warm but clearly detailed recorded sound quality, this program is as enjoyable and important now as it was at its 1999 original release. -- Mike D. Brownell
