I've got to object to the agenda here... why do we have a decent Scotsman driven to murder by a bunch of strong, ambitious women (the witches and Lady M), even if they are all slightly (or more than slightly) bat-shit crazy?  | as an older englishman i can understand why so many can struggle to understand shakespeare. he DID die a long time ago and even the english language has changed somewhat since then. moreso for those from across the pond who have lived their lives surrounded by millions of other people who all have no clue how to say 'aluminium' are surrounded by establishments who thrive on using acronyms instead of names (calling it language is using a whole lot of latitude of the term) and are so bad at football they had to reinvent the game of rugby, add a billion tea-breaks and four teams to extend the tea-breaks further, limited the participation of it's teams to one country, just so they could be the best at it. *sips his cup of tea, brushes a few biscuit crumbs off his tweed jacket and shouts hoorah at the television showing the extremely fast sport of test cricket*   the problem with shakespeare is that if it was modernised, one, we would lose just about all of the poetic side, and secondly, we will all quickly discover just how much shorter and, to be honest, how much duller it really is. 'rosencrantz and guildernstern are dead' is a great movie to watch before watching this, as it is a little softer on the ear and with gary oldman, tim roth, richard dreyfuss and iain glen among the cast, all much younger, it is an easy watch. it also has a lot of comedy involved with a great discussion about the chances of a coin flip, verbal tennis, and gary oldman's almost inventions, while both oldman and roth have no idea who is who or what is what as they step in and out of the limelight of shakespeares hamlet. the humour can be a little subtle if you are not used to it but the director does a brilliant job. i would never leave it out of my list if anyone ever asked me for a film top 10. it gave me the interest in shakespeare my english teachers failed to. will give this a watch as the cast is quite the ensemble. just hope the director is equally good :) p.s i used to be a hotelier in england's much smaller silicon valley equivalent, the M3 microchip corridor, and we once had members of BOEING stay with us while doing development work at a local wind tunnel. all of these very professional men were american and all were Captains by title, some of the nicest guys i have ever met. one of these gentlemen was surnamed Kirk......yes. he not only had a very thick skin (for obvious reasons) but a terrific sense of humour. |

| Guest-4258 ( Elizabethan English', which differs a lot from Brit and American English )  that was spoken between 1558–1603 that might be the reason it's different and this is Not difficult to understand easier to understand than Americans from Southern Louisiana-Texas etc you get the idea |

| It appears that this is something called 'Elizabethan English', which differs a lot from Brit and American English. You will be lucky to understand 50% of this. You would understand more watching a Scotch or Irish movie. You are going to need subtitles for this one - unless you are a native speaker of Elizabethan English - unlikely  |

| Like how pop musicians for example Paul McCartney and Status Quo admire classically composers and think they will 'give it a go' Hollyweird actors known for playing 'homicide detectives' admire Shakepeare and think they will 'give it a go' but they don't have what it takes and it always falls flat. I don't doubt there was motives. I wish I was as talented as Bach and Shakespeare but I am not, so I am not going to 'give it a go. Shakespearean actors are a whole different kettle of fish. A Shakespearean actor can easily transition to film/TV but not the other way around. Shakespeare is best left to the pros like the Brit Royal Shakespeare company. Just my two cents worth  |

 | If this was Othello I would definitely give it a shot but the Scottish play? I think Denzel is a great actor and I have always enjoyed his movies. Since the reviews for this have been good I decided to give it a shot. I took the play twice in school. Once for the enjoyment of the play and once to rip it apart. I was originally going to give this a pass but I am glad I watched it. Good film. |
