Howdy! There's an interesting story behind this album. Recorded in London in 1968-ish, Regimental Sgt. Zippo was supposed to be Elton John's debut album - but it was never released. Instead, it was put on a shelf to gather dust, and eventually replaced by 'Empty Sky' in 1969. If you're looking for hit songs, you won't find them here, but for serious Elton John fans, this should be a fun trip back to the beginning. And when you consider the time (late 60s) and the city where it was recorded (London) it's not surprising that a few of the tracks will remind you of the early Beatles. Never mind the funky Ringo Starr impersonation he's doing for the LSD-inspired cover shot. For music trivia fans: 'Empty Sky' didn't produce any hit songs either. His first hit single would have to wait one more year. On his second studio album - released in 1970, the single 'Your Song' finally put him on the map - and the radio - and the path to fame and fortune. Classic rock radio stations still have that track in rotation today, fifty years later. Thank you for sharing this rare gem, pmedia. |
