Nato nel 1903, già nel '29 Joe Valachi viene imprigionato nelle carceri di Sing Sing dove conosce Tony Bender. Inizia con questa conoscenza la sua attività nella mafia. Uscito di prigione infatti gli viene affidato, insieme a Bender, il compito di assassinare un mafioso, Ferrigno. Quindi giura fedeltà a "Cosa Nostra", e al servizio, come autista, di Gaetano Reina prende parte alla guerra promossa da Joe Masseria, Vito Genovese e Lucky Luciano contro la cosca napoletana. Assassinato Reina, sembra inevitabile un mare di sangue, ma gli stessi Genovese e Luciano eliminando Masseria riescono a ottenere nel 1931 una pacificazione tra le bande rivali, nonché una riorganizzazione nell'ambiente mafioso. Il capo supremo è così Maranzano che viene però eliminato da Genovese e Luciano perché contrario a far entrare lo spaccio della droga nella attività della mafia. Valachi trova poi in Gap (un altro mafioso destinato a essere eliminato, per motivi d'onore, dai suoi simili) un sincero amico e nel 1932, appoggiato da don Vito, sposa la figlia di Reina, Maria. Boss supremo tra il '32 e il '36 è Luciano, ma arrestato questi e impossibilitato Genovese (deve andare in Italia), lo scettro passa nelle mani di Anastasia che lo mantiene sino al 1946 quando ritorna in America Genovese. Poi, nel '57, deciso a impostare il traffico della droga, don Vito fa uccidere Anastasia provocando minuziose indagini da parte dell'F.B.I. Imprigionati Genovese, Salerno e altri, Joe Valaschi (anch'egli in carcere) accetta le offerte e anche i ricatti dell'agente Ryan e si sente minacciato dalla lunga mano di don Vito: decide di rivelare ciò che sa nella nota inchiesta di Washington nel 1963. Tenta il suicidio, ma muore di morte naturale dopo 7 anni di prigione.
