JAMES JOYCE (1882-1941) was an Irish novelist and poet noted for his experimental use of language and exploration of new literary methods in such large works of fiction as ULYSSES (1922) and FINNEGANS WAKE (1939).  He is considered to be one of the most influential writers in the modernist avant-garde of the early 20th century.

Although most of his adult life was spent abroad, Joyce's fictional universe centres on Dublin and is populated largely by characters who closely resemble family members, enemies and friends from his time there.  The vivid short stories in DUBLINERS (1914) are a naturalistic depiction of the sordidness of Irish middle class life, intended to show the stultifying inertia and social conformity from which Dublin suffered in the early years of the 20th century.  The collection centres on Joyce's idea of an epiphany β€” a moment where a character experiences a life-changing self-understanding or illumination β€” and progress chronologically, beginning with stories of youth and progressing in age to culminate in "The Dead", one of the world’s great short stories.

His first novel, A PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A YOUNG MAN (1916), earned him a place at the forefront of literary modernism.  It traces the religious and intellectual awakening of young Stephen Dedalus, Joyce's fictional alter ego, who questions and rebels against the Catholic and Irish conventions under which he has grown, culminating in his self-exile from Ireland to Europe.

ULYSSES (1922), Joyce’s undisputed masterpiece, is considered one of the most important works of Modernist literature and has been called "a demonstration and summation of the entire movement."  Set with precision in the streets and alleys of Dublin, the novel chronicles the peripatetic appointments and encounters of Leopold Bloom in the course of an ordinary day, 16 June 1904.  It establishes a series of parallels with Homer's Odyssey in an array of contrasting literary styles, most notably its stream-of-consciousness technique, careful structuring, and experimental prose β€” replete with puns, parodies, and allusions β€” as well as its rich characterization and broad humour.  Bloom and his wife, Molly, are portrayed with a fullness and warmth of humanity that is arguably unsurpassed in fiction.

Joyce’s last work, FINNEGANS WAKE (1939), is noted for its experimental style and reputation as one of the most difficult novels in the Western canon.  The entire book is written in a largely idiosyncratic language, which blends standard English lexical items and neologistic multilingual puns and portmanteau words to unique effect.  Many critics believe the technique was Joyce's attempt to recreate the experience of sleep and dreams.  Although seemingly unintelligible at first reading, the book is full of poetry and wit, containing passages of great beauty.  Characters from literature and history appear and merge and disappear, and throughout the book Joyce himself is present, joking, mocking his critics, defending his theories, remembering his father, enjoying himself.

Additional works include a play, EXILES (1918), and several volumes of verse, including CHAMBER MUSIC (1907) (referring, Joyce explained, to the sound of urine hitting the side of a chamber pot), POMES PENYEACH (1927), and COLLECTED POEMS (1936).  Joyce's non-fiction critical writings include newspaper articles, reviews, lectures and essays that address diverse issues such as aesthetics, the functions of the press, censorship, Irish cultural history, English literature and Empire.  Finally, his extraordinary letters represent the dispatches of a man on the margins of society, begging for scraps and moving every couple of months to avoid creditors, and paint a detailed portrait of an artist who sacrificed all modern comforts and any semblance of stability to give himself the space to transcribe his vision to paper.
