For P., with appreciation and gratitude

THOMAS MERTON (1915-1968) was an American Trappist monk, writer, theologian, mystic, poet, social activist, and scholar of comparative religion.  He was arguably the most influential American Catholic author of the twentieth century, writing more than sixty books ranging from monastic spirituality to civil rights, social justice, nonviolence, and nuclear proliferation, as well as many essays and reviews.

Merton converted to Roman Catholicism and in 1941 entered a community of monks belonging to the Trappists, the most ascetic Roman Catholic monastic order.  He gained international reputation with the publication of his bestselling autobiography, THE SEVEN STOREY MOUNTAIN (1948), in which he reflects on his early life and on the quest for faith in God.  It became the defining spiritual memoir of its time and served as a powerful recruitment tool, sending scores of World War II veterans, students, and even teenagers flocking to monasteries across the U.S.  Time magazine said it "redefined the image of monasticism and made the concept of saintliness accessible to moderns", and it has never been out of print.

His early works are strictly spiritual, but by the 1960s he had arrived at a broadly human viewpoint, one deeply concerned about the world and issues like peace, racial tolerance, and social equality.  He became, according to Daniel Berrigan, the conscience of the peace movement.  Referring to race and peace as the two most urgent issues of our time, Merton was a strong supporter of the nonviolent civil rights movement, which he called "certainly the greatest example of Christian faith in action in the social history of the United States."  For his social activism Merton endured severe criticism, from Catholics and non-Catholics alike, who assailed his political writings as unbecoming of a monk.

During his last years, Merton became deeply interested in Asian religions, particularly Zen Buddhism, and in promoting interfaith understanding.  Having studied the Desert Fathers and other Christian mystics as part of his monastic vocation, Merton found many parallels between the language of these Christian mystics and that of Zen philosophy.  He pioneered dialogue with prominent Asian spiritual figures, including the Dalai Lama (who praised Merton as having a more profound understanding of Buddhism than any other Christian he had known), the Japanese writer D. T. Suzuki, the Thai Buddhist monk Buddhadasa, and the Vietnamese monk Thich Nhat Hanh, and authored books on Zen, Confucianism and Taoism.
