MARYSE CONDƉ (b. 1937) is a Guadeloupean author of epic historical fiction, much of it based in Africa, and a scholar of Francophone literature.  She has won Grand prix littĆ©raire de la Femme (1986), Prix de Lā€™AcadĆ©mie francaise (1988), and in 2018 was the first recipient of the New Academy Prize in Literature, a newly-created alternate award to the Nobel Prize in Literature which was not conferred that year because of a sex-abuse scandal.

Her novels trace the relationships between African peoples and the diaspora, especially the Caribbean, and often focus on topics with strong feminist and political concerns.  Her first novel, HEREMAKHONON (1976), about a young West Indian womanā€™s quest for roots, was so controversial that it was pulled from shelves after six months.  While the story closely parallels CondĆ©'s own life during her first stay in Guinea, and is written as a first-person narrative, she stresses that it is not an autobiography.  Subsequent works explore racial, gender and cultural issues in a variety of historical eras and locales, including the Salem witch trials in I, TITUBA (1986); the 19th-century Bambara Empire of Mali in SEGU (1980); and the 20th-century building of the Panama Canal and its influence on the emergence of the West Indian middle class in THE TREE OF LIFE (1992).  WINDWARD HEIGHTS (2008) is a reworking of Emily BrontĆ«ā€™s Wuthering Heights, set in Guadeloupe at the turn of the 20th century, with race and culture featured as issues that divide people.

Her later writings have been increasingly autobiographical, such as TALES FROM THE HEART (1998) and VICTOIRE (2010), a biography of her maternal grandmother.  This torrent also features a number of unitemized contributions by CondĆ© to scholarly journals, including short stories, articles and interviews.
