| My understanding is that English has the highest total speakers. Mandarin is a bit funky here though. Technically, Mandarin is merely a dialect of Chinese, so it depends what you consider "native" tongue. It might be a majority of Chinese, but there are 100s of millions of Chinese who natively speak another dialect. |

| For those who still have a functional brain: Mandarin is by far the most spoken language in the world. The argument that Mandarin is a collection of dialects, goes for English as well. American English (and Canadian, Australian, New Zeeland, etc.) is different from British English in pronunciation, spelling, grammar and vocabulary. In other words, English is also a collection of dialects. The number of people natively speaking Mandarin is a multiple of the number of natively English speaking people. Since the end of last century there is a huge increase in people studying Mandarin, because of growing awareness that China was going to be the next big player on the global stage, economically, politically and military. So the actual number of people speaking Mandarin is far higher than the number of native speakers. |
