Pirating more safely

When you upload or download a torrent your ip address will show in the “swarm” of seeds and peers. With that ip you can be traced by anti-piracy organizations. There are a number of ways to pirate torrents more safely. Below are the following methods:
- Proxy & VPN
- IPFiltering
- Using a Seedbox

Proxy versus VPN
Proxies and VPN have one thing in common: they both make you appear to be connecting to the internet from another location then where you really are. But they are fundamentally different and also differ in the protection they offer.

A schematic of the difference between proxy and VPN:
Image error

Proxy server
A proxy server is a computer that acts as a mediator between your computer and the internet. Network traffic flows from your computer to the proxy server, and then from the proxy server to the internet. That means to outsiders, it looks like your computers IP address is really the proxy’s IP address. Proxy servers usually don’t encrypt the network traffic it handles so it can accept connections from thousands of users at once. It is usually faster than a VPN connection, but your ISP and government agencies can see what you are doing.

Proxy server lists:
https://free-proxy-list.net/
https://hidemy.name/en/proxy-list/

VPN
A VPN is different from a proxy in that it creates a secure “tunnel” between your computer and the VPN server, which can be used to force all of your internet traffic through the VPN server. VPNs are more secure than proxies. Your ISP or government agencies can see that you are connected to a VPN server, but everything else including your IP address and web activities is completely hidden.

A VPN provider still can see what you are doing, can sell your data and can also log your activities. Free VPN services are therefore not recommended. With a paid VPN provider you will have to check if they keep records.

The Best VPNs for torrenting, P2P, filesharing recommended by multiple VPN reviewers:
- NordVPN
- IPVanish
- ExpressVPN
- AirVPN
- VPNArea
- Buffered
- Private Internet Access

IPFiltering
An ipfilter list is a list of addresses and ranges of malicious peers that will transmit junk data (i.e. anti-P2P) or peers that may be intrusive on your online privacy. You can setup your BitTorrent client to filter out the malicious peers.

Seedbox
A seedbox is a dedicated server at a high speed datacenter with a public IP address for the downloading and seeding of bittorrent files. Each Seedbox has one of more torrent clients with web user interface that you can log into via any browser where you can control your Seedbox remotely. In the interface, you can load torrent files or torrent URLs and once loaded they will start downloading/seeding remotely with no tracks to the local computer IP of the Seedbox user.

Once the torrent has downloaded on the Seedbox, it’s hosted there waiting for you to download it whenever you wish. Downloading is commonly done via an FTP/SFTP connection to the Seedbox. You need an FTP Client for it like FileZilla. Some Seedbox providers also offer an HTTP file browser that allows you to download files from the Seedbox through a web browser.
A Seedbox prevents any torrent traffic from coming from your home internet connection but instead you only initiate legitimate FTP/HTTP traffic that your ISP Internet Service Provider should permit.

Sorry folks for seeming lazy, but my life has been terrible for a while and I've had no time to keep up to date on this, and being in a state of anger and drunkenness over the death of my partner in life, I did a big error. I forgot a torrent client was active and turned off my VPN. The torrent client was running for approx 5 hours seeding two files (one I'd had 'incomplete' for ages and then suddenly it completes and seeds!).

How long is it likely I'll have to wait till I can relax I'm not going to be taken to Court, if that's what happens? Years ago in the UK it was a Warning for a first infringement. If I'm tracked (but I think my ISP may use the same IP for a few people?) it would be my first infringement.

Any info appreciated. I tried to start this as a Thread but I'm not allowed.

Thanks. VPN only on my Laptop. Normally do all my browsing with the VPN. Windows 10.  The hiccup happened as I was using a portable utorrent that likes to minimse itself onto the Task Bar and then out of sight on the Task Bar! I hardly ever use it, but I thought I'd listen to some new music and I use uTorrent for music mainly. I had UL 90MB and 300MB of the two files.

I wouldn't worry too much sounds like you have enough on your shoulders. Really the big question was what were you torrenting at the time? =(And you don't need to answer that here)= Point is some releases are watched more than others and particular areas to be concerned with are anything owned by say Disney, or particular new releases.. ISP's will comply with searches carried out by the DMCA and 'private trackers' but as in all things money makes the world go round and even such searches cost someone.. Usually the person who holds the rights

If you were downloading an old Seinfeld episode per say I wouldn't lose sleep over the man showing up to cut off your internet.

In America anyways as way of example they will have your ISP Internet service provider contact you with a letter usually saying in the nutshell, "Knock it off buster or we will throttle your service or terminate you as a customer."

Which is a threat they won't, and can't legally carry out without having warned you in the same way like 10-15 times.

Mainly its uploaders that need to be more careful but you never know what is actually being watched and seeders also get noticed. It is always a best policy to be using every tool at your disposal to protect yourself, but don't get swept away in paranoia over a few hours of seeding a torrent after your "protection" slipped off. If you get a note in the mail look at it as free kindling.

Oh and last bit of food for thought is be careful of any personal information you do share out even in a seemingly harmless forum post.

(edited for my terrible writing)

Thanks.

First paragraph isn't about the torrents.

You have no idea what I have on my plate. That's not to chastise you but the things that have happened over the last 3 to 4 years are just so incredible you'd never believe it. I told her I'd tell the story of what the "health professionals" had done to us. I even went so far to say I'd make them pay. I took so many pictures and videos of her and us together and now I am tormented by every one. I took them to feel close to her and now I can't bear to look at any.  She's everywhere on every phone, camera, youtube vids.  Her ashes are right here next to me, under the bed so she can be near my heart. She told me once I was her heart.  And now I'm crying again. I'm going to have to pay for counseling I think.  Because in a way I'm getting worse. That's all I can say without giving 'details'. She took so much caring for that's why I'm so out of touch.

Back on Topic (sorry but if you knew the reality of the above. I'm bursting all the time to tell people what they did to us both all the time).

The files were one music album and one adult clip (the last is the one that suddenly went from 0 to 100% while out of protection. . Not sure if I should state who by on both scores? I'm not sure how 'big' the names are.

Do you know what happens in the UK at all? This was done late-ish Sunday night UK. So if the tracking is not automated (some robot is logging everything 24/7)  it's likely the USA people responsible for tracking may have been off work? What you said calms me a bit because I know its USA that were most aggressive chasers of individuals and I can remember huge fines levelled at Dummies (the books) seeders in the US. So if they are now going according to your post, I can be slightly more at ease.

Oh and am I even asking in the right place?

to add on to SypherJ's post, some ISPs, along with sending a letter, will also cause a popup screen that makes you acknowledge the ISP has warned you of the infringement (activity).  I would not acknowledge this screen, and the way to bypass this popup (this worked a while back) is to change the DNS on your router from default (ISP generally) to a defined DNS that isn't your ISP.  A quick search and you can find plenty of legit DNSs and videos on how to change it, each router will vary (DNS can also be changed on individual devices as well)

Thanks but you know what I'll do with that (now thinking I'm being clever? :_facepalm  Correct me if I'm wrong). I think I will leave it. Why? Well I'd want to know if they were aware of my activities, and that would tell me they were.  If I changed things to avoid me seeing me this message, I'd know nothing. And I presume the message would also contain information that also would put me in a position to understand where I am in their system for warnings / strikes / actions / third parties anything else I'm unaware of.  I guess they would make it frightening but they couldn't really lie?

It's your choice to take the risk.
Just ask yourself...
Are you feeling lucky punk

They may email you, they may call you, or both.
Its likely they have a complaint listing the files in question and they know who is making the complaint.

"You dont have the files in question and you are going to change your wi-fi password to prevent unauthorized usage of your account if that has happened" ..... (Says you to your isp if necessary)

This is coming from your own ISP, you're not fooling them. if asked to respond then do so. Contacting you is your isp's way of appeasing the complainant.

Not responding could trigger further action and is terrible legal strategy.

Ok, I think you need to calm yourself down my friend... as the files were "one music album and one adult clip" it is highly unlikely you will be contacted by your ISP or any other anti-pirating do gooder. Just keep that VPN on 24/7 and you'll be good.

In good old UK fashion>>>> DON'T PANIC Image error
PS: Sorry to hear your troubles.

You just go me thinking. The 'access' to get to my wifi is that which is printed on my router/modem thing. I do know you are supposed to change them as some people have like a keygen for ISP's for access unknown to the owner of the router/modem. So that is one idea, but another is something I think I made when trying to set up CCTV. I made I think it's called a hotspot?  I think basically anyone who officially uses my ISP can log on to my Hotspot with their passwords or whatever (I never made such an account I don't think) so is that another way I could try to raise doubt it was me?

Thanks. My life has been haunted by things that shouldn't ever happen from something that shouldn't ever happen from something.....
so I tend to be a bit paranoid.

I'd like to keep my VPN on more of the time but there are many sites that just won't load if I use it.

Isn't that one of the things a VPN is for.  If you don't have access to certain sites, point your VPN to that country.
I have a couple of sites in the UK that you can only access them if you're IP address is in the UK.  I just set my VPN to get a UK IP and I can access those sites.

Ah good point but I don't like the idea of using a Server in my own Country. You know something goes wrong and there is no cross border complication that might put a Copyright holder off.  It would all happen much easier if everything was in the same Country.

Some years ago, in the last university I was at, I called on a colleague in her office just before she retired. She had an old computer sitting under a desk at the side of the office and humming away to itself. "What's this one for?" I asked.

"I don't really know." Was the reply. "John Doe---a post-doc she was supervising who shall remain nameless---installed it when he started. I think he said it was doing some sort of data analysis."

I put a monitor, a keyboard, and a mouse on it... and it was logged in as her, and was downloading pretty much anything and everything you could think of and seeding over the university connection using a professor's credentials with no VPN protection. We dismantled it and I held onto it for when the student came to collect his property... strangely, he never did :_:O:_:O:_:O

Long since retired, I think the poor old girl is still waiting for the Feds to come knocking :_facepalm:_facepalm:_facepalm

Don't seed from your phone...

When on mobile data it's not uncommon for the speed to reduce.
If you have a lot of seeding going on it will reduce the speed as well.
If you say you have to reset your modem then you are on Wi-Fi and you'll have to check your subscription.
Eventho they say it's unlimited after a xxxx amount down/upload they will reduce or lower your speed because it often says so in the small print.
Reason is the "fair use policy".
So there are 3 solutions...
1. Seed less, none, or put a seeding ratio in your download client.
2. Get a fast connection.
3. Get a seedbox (if you want to keep seeding)

I personally would go for option 1 and a seeding ratio of 1:1. That way you give back what you take. If you feel that's not enough you are free to raise it.
See if that makes a difference.
And don't seed on mobile data.

I think you should mention that in most 3rd world countries pirating without a proxy isn't an issue :_:)

Also you could add I2P as a method but there probably aren't i2p torrents on torrentgalaxy, although you could use an outproxy such as stormycloud.

staffnote:

No outside links. It would be advertising otherwise.
