| I am curious what speed you all get thru VPN when torrenting tho? My regular non VPN /non Torrenting is 30mbs whilst upload is 4mbs however with VPN torrenting max i get is 4mbs with uploads only at 1mbs. | |

| Your VPN will slow it down, but shouldn't slow it down that much what VPN service r u using? Try a better location, like the Netherlands for example | |

| Ah yeh well i know my VPN is not the best its Cyberghost, yeh i tried closeby countries servers seems about the same speeds besides i`m sure my old 1st gen core i7 seems to struggle with 1mb upload as when i watch films on PC i get sound jitters so then have to restrict upload speeds to 950kbs to get smooth playback i`m sure my old pc doesnt help. I`m not that bothered about the speed was just curious to see what speeds people get with their VPN. I could switch VPN but got a great offer few years ago thru a well known shareware software site for cyberghost lifetime service for the US equivilant of $105 of which i think must be my 6th year now so cant complain too much. I`m guessing when i get a better PC in future i may get better speeds. Last edited by realityshow on 2021-12-21 07:04:54 | |

| Above are my speeds (sometimes hit 240 down) without VPN. With VPN connected to the nearest server, about 400 miles away, I lose about 30 Mbps down, up stays the same. | |

| Speed test results are inaccurate sherb, try the test on testmy.net and post the results again just to see the difference, i find the results closer to the actual upload and download speed i receive in my devices. | |

| That's akward sherb, it usually gives accurate results since it download and upload random bytes instead of just running network benchmarking, it works for me the best than speedtest, how much is the difference from previous test and from real world speed ? | |

| My speed without VPN is roughly 200, give or take. So according to testmynet I'm losing 120 somewhere lol lol...as I said it's only testmynet giving me these bad results all other test sites are coming back with what I should be getting (ish). Funny thing is, the ups are good it's just the downs aint right for some reason!! | |

| Downloading a well seeded torrent (or a Linux distro as they're from dedicated servers) is probably the best way to test it, as it's probably what u r using it for anyway | |

| Here's mine. With VPN. I think that it's very important that everybody who use torrents use a VPN that allows PortForwarding, to prevent speed-loss. I use PIA: https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/ | |

| OK so i just tried testmy.net with VPN turned ON : result is 33.8 Mbps for download speed and 8.3 Mbps for upload speed. So how come max speed i`ve seen when torrenting with qbittorrent is 4mbs is it my torrent app sucks? should i change to something else? and if so can i export all existing finished torrent magnets to preload into another client. (sorry if `im reaching for straws right now) just wondering. Last edited by realityshow on 2021-12-21 09:02:20 | |

| What do u get when downloading the torrent below? it's hosted on a dedicated server and should be enough to max it out, depending on peering/route Last edited by BigJ0554 on 2021-12-21 09:19:43 | |

| Realityshow, don't expect direct download speed for torrents files, BitTorrent network speed is usually slow, it's not the problem of your client, kind of like using tor network and regular web, tor is slow due to 3 layer of routing and BitTorrent network is for downloading large file over a extended period of time. But you can try to change the settings of the client, like port selection to try to increase speed, do some research on it. How ever download speed really depends on your ISP and the speed limit of the server that provides the file. If you have good ISP to test the speed, i suggest downloading a big file (size above 1gb) from Google drive or one drive (or any server that support gigabit network speed), that will provide a real world speed of your network (use download manager like idm for better analysis), that's how I test speed, if there is any other methods, please mention it. | |

| IDM is multi thread, I think single thread is more accurate, but u r right about torrents, plus I'd like to add that qbittorrent, and other torrent clients r measured in MiB/s, not Mbps like the speedtest is, meaning 1MiB/s = 8.4Mbps | |

| Ah! yeh i feel dumb now thxs for the explaination. I should have been paying attention ha! I tried that dedicated torrent u mentioned it jumping around not giving a consistant speed if i go to general tab it tells me the average speed for that particular torrent is giving me around 248kib/s Thxs i had wondered about that, but then as everyone here seems to boast on their speed; it should in theory be very close to direct download speeds (joke)haha and also my computer maybe too old perhaps. | 248KiB/s is pretty slow dude, when I download it I get at least my full advertised speed, my qbit says 12-14MiB/s must be better route, the ping speed to my server is 23ms which is pretty good This is on several dedicated and shared seedboxes https://releases.ubuntu.com/21.10/ubuntu-21.10-desktop-amd64.iso.torrent | |

| Hardware is also a factor realityshow, extensively outdated hardware(above 4-5 years) will not be able to provide peak performance even though you have great network speed, bandwidth will perform better with latest hardware since it's optimized to perform for newer generation devices, like 5g over 4g, wifi 6 over pervious generation etc since new chipset and antenna will provide better connection speed over older model, my old phone that's about 5 years old but still functional does not receive signal as good as my new phone even though I have the same network connection at the same location. It's better to upgrade devices after 3-4 years for better performance, but it's not partical for many people. Also try to use wired connection (ethernet cable) over wifi, in theory wifi have 1/3 connection loss even within permitted connection distance. It might give higher speed for torrent upload ( if you are not already using this method or depending on wifi mostly). | |

| Not sure about single thread giving more accurate results over multiple threads but Usually when using single thread, downloading from the server can limit the transfer of packet data(tcpip) according to the server data sending speed or it could be limited by firewall of the server from where the data is downloaded. When using multiple thread, we get multiple streams for downloading of data packet from various servers. hence if we use multiple threads, data transfer is more and less risk of interrupted streaming. It improves download speed, pushing performance and maximize connect speed, isn't the true speed metrics for the connection? | |

| yeh seems so, probably doesnt help i`m on win7, i think i may have to get a 2nd PC and run linux for torrents in future Absolutely the only way to go Thanks to the both of you seems i WAS getting Max download speed sometimes after all as BigJ0554 explained it, i had mistaked mib for mb. if i hit 4mib/s in Qbittorrent then that`s 33.6mb/s which is pretty close to my direct speed (havent checked that yet as i`d have to close my torrent and vpn but sure its similar or close to.) Tho it is rare i hit that max speed i have seen it on occasion with most healthy torrents giving 3Mib/s so thats 25mb/s which is good enough. Really appreciate your assistance!! | |
